Sorry Guys, I hate these threads, and now I am posting one. Jay passed away last Saturday after a lengthy battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He had just had his 70th Birthday in April. I was a friend of his, and a junior partner of sorts in his Siomca Bonneville car, along with Steve Dennish of Limeworks fame. Jay had a huge history in this hobby, from his days at Petersen in the Book Division, to freelance work for the Rodders Journal, Street Rodder and others, not to mention his Hot Rod Ad Agency.
If you really want to read something cool that he wrote, there is a wonderful article in, I think, 1001 Rod and Custom Ideas, or perhaps Rod Action, documenting his Road Trip with my old boss Darrell Zipp to the `76 Street Rod Nats in his old 6APEEL 32 Roadster with the Ak Miller propane 6 motor, and a Teardrop Trailer in tow.
We were friends for 30 yeqrs, and although we weren`t close in later times, I reconnected with him last year and visited. I owe him, and his friendship, as a part of who I am today.....Rest in Peace, Jay. You were one of the Good Ones....

Nicely written. My condolences. Always enjoyed his work. I remember the road trip article. I recall one instance from it where they were nearly out of "fuel", found a place that had propane, but had to deal with a proprietor that was very reluctant to sell them LPG for the car as he wasn't set up by his State to collect road taxes and was worried he'd get in trouble filling a motor vehicle.

  4. Kiwi, I'm sorry to read of your loss, and offer condolences to Jays family.
When I read of the 6APEEL Roadster, I remembered that from an article I have somewhere, in black n white. Had the book since I was a teenager.
The Propane and trailer were memorable items back then, kinda cutting edge.

  5. Sorry to hear, that Simca and the build up of it kept the teenage me interested in the Salt.

It was his writing that inspired me to become a hot rodder, be different (6Appeal) and to write like you were talking to friends.
I was lucky to meet him once at SEMA, he was humble about the effect he had on early hot rodding, and was amazed that I remembered his Simca and the 6 appeal.
    He will be missed,,,,,,,,,,

Jay was a good old friend! He would often come by my sand blasting shop for story ideas or just to see what was going on. After all the car talk we usually switched to our home state of Massachusetts.
    Bye Jay!

  11. Old thread, does anyone know where this Simca is? Someone is looking for it. I had heard it was being prepped for Bonneville again?

I first met Jay at Andy's Picnic in 2012. He was looking to feature my roadster in Hot Rod Deluxe (Sept. 2013).
Jay was a nice guy, very professional, and a true enthusiast. I was happy to have met him!

  18. Yeah, someone on FB has tracked it that far. @typo41 , myself and others are just interested parties trying to help the guy find it. For me, it is selfish. As a kid I saw Jay Building it in Street Rodder and fell in love with the car. Would love to see it on the salt again!

As of three weeks ago, he was working on a friends 3 window coupe. Took a long time to get it in so he must be real busy.

It is probably me lol, I am the one looking for the car on Facebook. I called Matt, the guy in Oregon who sold it last year with no avail. I hope I can track it down
