Cool and rare ...you should grab it. Those only came in trucks...how many automatic trucks were there back in the 50s? Not many.
a friend called me today, he bought some stuff at the auction at my place a few months ago. He was asking about the starter he got, said it was for a chevy truck with a hydramatic. With the upside down solenoid. I had that thing for years, and never noticed that about it. I though it was for a powerglide or 3 speed. Huh. anyways, he got a good deal.
I took a screen shot of an ebay ad and all the pics he had to see if I can run across one at the swaps. Haven't seen one yet..
Picked up a van a few years ago. Factory 235 with hydro. The trans was missing but I sold the flywheel and trans adapter to a HAMB member. Still have the starter somewhere
Anthony...not sure the 6 cyl hydro starter is the same as the V8...but its probably just as rare if it's unique to the hydro trans.
Still trying to contact the owner. Did a search here to find some info. IamButch56sedanduvery posthumously came through
Wern't all Hydro's 4 speeds? IIRC, low shifted once, super shifted to 3rd and in drive it shifted to 4th.
Guy contacted me. He’s looking for the starter Wonder what’s a fair price is if all that’s there is the bell housing and trans. No flywheel in the pics. The engine is an early SBC. Non power pack. Cant tell by the pics if it has side mount capability. The valve covers are staggered.
Absolutely The current owner isn’t sure it’s all there though. If a starter and flywheel is missing, that’s gonna hurt the value.
I’m hoping it’s all there. I’ve never used one of these but the ratios seem like it would work with higher rear gears. No OD needed I’ve thought about using a 283 in a 49 GMC I have. That bell housing should bolt up to the factory location in the truck. I have a Hydro steering column from a van I could use to modify my factory column.
That partial casting number comes back as 3732690 for a ‘56-‘57 SBC and if that is a D in the date then it was cast April/8th/‘57 No side mounts until 1958.
