Technical Need some sheet metal help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1933_willys_77, Jul 26, 2021.

  1. So here's the deal, I melted out the factory lead. It seems someone got a little happy with a hammer before lathering on the lead. After wire brush cleanup it is a welded seam. The two pieces are overlapped. I need to separate the panels with the least amount of damage to either side. Any advice is appreciated. I think a thin cutoff wheel right down the center of the weld is the best you can do. The thinner, the better. To keep the kerf to a minimum. Maybe use your dremel.

A thin cutoff wheel is what I'd use, probably with an air powered cutoff tool .

Agree, cut off wheel. The use a grinder to remove any excess, above and below. Don't worry about damaging it so much, it's only metal. You will have to re-hammer and dolly it after rewelding it anyway. Just don't remove too much metal!

    just curious...it's a factory seam, isn't it?

  6. Yes it is. I need to separate the panels to transfer them to the body I'm actually going to build. The inside is made up of a lot of wood parts so it needs to come apart and go back together as factory.

Will shrink after, so hammer&dolly are your friend.
