That 283 crank has a dimple in the end to center the drill bit. So if you keep it somewhat straight up and down and side ways, the bolt should be near straight in the crank. Since it’s at the center of the shaft, being a little off would not effect the balance very much. Granted a lathe would be better, but eyeballing is good enough there.

Tacks , that’s what the drugstore charged me an extra 4 cents for . I wasn’t sure how you were supposed to hold them on !

Cheech and Chong come to mind, something like…, well, never mind.
Seems he didn’t want the “tacks” to hold it on…

The phrase get down to brass tacks (not brass tax) is an Americanism dating from the 19th century. In the idiom, brass tacks means (1) the essentials, or (2) the basic facts, so to get down to brass tacks is to focus on the essentials.

I haven't seen a picture of said damper bolted to the newly drilled and tapped crank.
I think we need a picture of @Lloyd's paint & glass with todays newspaper in front of his engine with the damper bolted on. Might have been a random picture from the internet.
    Without pictures it didn't happen.;)

I'm afraid cracked heads would require a lot more than a couple of tack welds;):p.
