Just recently got my 51 Merc running after it sitting for 50 years. The exhaust on it is pretty bad on it. My Merc has a 331 Hemi in it and I would like to run the exhaust thru the bumper ends. I've been thinking about Porter's or Smithy's. Never ran either one. Ran Thrush glass packs in the past on some off topic cars. Which do you prefer? Thanks.
Looks like you're making good progress. Can't wait to see it on the road. If it were me I'd check with Redlands Muffler and see what their thoughts were. But then again you might have done that already.
I plan to go with Porters on the 292 in my 48. I'd have to say that the best thing is to hear a similar engine that sounds like you want yours to sound and find out what they have for pipes and mufflers though. That might be in a similar hemi powered roadster or coupe with exhaust out the back.
Slowly but surely making progress with a little help from my friends.Haven't checked with Redlands Muffler yet!
I can’t wait to hear and see this car running under its own power. Good work!!! I’m still looking out for the glove box lid!!!
IMHO, the best sounding mufflers for a 50's custom. Heavy gauge steel. They make them in different lengths, and with 'glass, steel, or no packing, as per your order. AND they are a small operation, everything done, by them, in a small town!
I'd trust Tom Face at Scotty's in helping make a decision. {And, if you end up there, I'll give you a vintage Scotty's Muffler decal (if I can find it).} Stan
I use the Brockman Mellowtones on my 51 Mercury. I got mine steel packed from them, I love the way they sound and are made so much better than the cheap Smithy mufflers I have run in the past. Great local small business too!
I have Smithys on the flathead, I have Porters on the hemi. Both make a lovely noise! I recommend Porters on your merc.
Put a second carb on that Hemi and... LEAVE THE HOOD OFF!!!!!! Ta hell wid da mufflerz! (no kidd'in......the pipes will be sooo long and exit out the rear bumpers it really won't be that noisy inside the car!) Try to run 2 1/2" pipe all the way back or at least 2 1/4". A nice snotty idling cam with just a little attitude will sound very mellow at idle and cruising speeds. At highway speed you could even listen to the radio(but I don't know why you would...not with that Hemi-music you'll be making! 6sally6
I've got no idea. Whatever Tom put in, nice and quiet -- I made enuf noise for years with the roadster. He also put a stainless steel muffler on my truck after years of the stock one being eaten up with the salt.
I always had good results using Dynomax Super Turbos #17749. Its a oval, side to side muffler. The more you run them the better they sound.. If that were a flathead I would say no muffler with the pipes going all the way to the back bumper.. But those Hemi's have such a deep sound. I wish Smittys were still made the way they used to be.
After listening to countless exhaust videos on you tube, I ordered a set of porters for my merc. Speedway Motors had free shipping and I had a $30.00 coupon from pay pal. I never could find any videos for the Brockmans. P.S Stanback I tried calling Scotty's a couple of times and could never get a hold of Tom. I still might have them install my mufflers when I get my bumper finished.
