I have heard the term long door/short door on 1946/48 Fords. I have a 1947 Ford Business Coupe. Is that a long door or a short door??

the business coupes were short they used the same doors as a 4 door sedan the club coupes doors were longer they used the same door as a 2 door sedan , the business coupe did not have a back seat so they didn't need as big of doors to let passengers in the back

  4. Would that be the same for a 1947 Merc coupe?

Mercs, '46 thru '48 did not offer Business Coupes with the short doors. All Merc coupes were Sedan Coupe 6 passenger models, long doors.

  6. Could someone post some pics of their 1946-1948 business coupes please.

  7. I put a couple long doors on my 48 business coupe only had to move the B-pillars back 8 1/2 inches

  8. Wow, Never realized it was that much. Thought maybe 5-6 inches at most.

The business coupe had short doors and no rear seat, it used the same door as the front doors from a four door sedan; the tudor sedan and club coupe had a rear seat and used the longer doors so the difference would be about 8".

Didn't someone write a song about short doors? "Short doors got no reason, no reason for short doors"

  23. Which is more desirable? The short door looks kind of stumpy to me and wouldn't the long be easier to get in and out of?

Seat is exactly in the same place and doors open the same, except one is longer than the other. I suppose the larger opening and distance by the 'B' pillar being further back would make it a bit easier for bigger or taller drivers and/or passengers to get in and out of. A bit more room to climb into the back seat as well:p:rolleyes:

1941 "short door coupe" with 3 piece front fenders. A very early model.

  26. The roof line on a business coupe is more laid down at the back- the long door or club coupe/ sedan coupe has a more upright rear roofline to accommodate head room for rear seat passengers.the business orbshortbdoor had no rear seat. The rear quarter on a business coupe is longer ( because of the shorter door) the trunk lid is the same. Wheelbase is the same- the rear sail panel between the back window and the trunk lid is wider also.

I can't speak for 41 but I have a 42 business coupe with the short doors. It's a someday project. Pretty rough right now.
