I have heard the term long door/short door on 1946/48 Fords. I have a 1947 Ford Business Coupe. Is that a long door or a short door??
the business coupes were short they used the same doors as a 4 door sedan the club coupes doors were longer they used the same door as a 2 door sedan , the business coupe did not have a back seat so they didn't need as big of doors to let passengers in the back
Mercs, '46 thru '48 did not offer Business Coupes with the short doors. All Merc coupes were Sedan Coupe 6 passenger models, long doors.
Here are 2 shoots from the side, four doors the same length as the business front doors. [4IMG]http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k202/flatred53/258050_zpsrsglwtxe.jpg[/IMG] Lars
The business coupe had short doors and no rear seat, it used the same door as the front doors from a four door sedan; the tudor sedan and club coupe had a rear seat and used the longer doors so the difference would be about 8".
I know this is Old, But I have Personally seen a Mercury short door coupe, It did Have Canadian lic. plates tho.. Mercury also had longer W.B.from windshield forward.. Ford Books call the "long door coupes" SEDAN COUPES...
i never was aware of the short/ long doors. my boss at rainbird in glendora ca 1969-1974 allways drove his 46-7-8 coupe to work all the time.
Forgot I had still, it might assist others and show differences. position of rear fenders to 1/4 window, different roof profile to trunk
show the business coupe with shelve and NO JUMP SEATS, for business men place below shelve for catalogs etc.
Didn't someone write a song about short doors? "Short doors got no reason, no reason for short doors"
Which is more desirable? The short door looks kind of stumpy to me and wouldn't the long be easier to get in and out of?
Seat is exactly in the same place and doors open the same, except one is longer than the other. I suppose the larger opening and distance by the 'B' pillar being further back would make it a bit easier for bigger or taller drivers and/or passengers to get in and out of. A bit more room to climb into the back seat as well
The roof line on a business coupe is more laid down at the back- the long door or club coupe/ sedan coupe has a more upright rear roofline to accommodate head room for rear seat passengers.the business orbshortbdoor had no rear seat. The rear quarter on a business coupe is longer ( because of the shorter door) the trunk lid is the same. Wheelbase is the same- the rear sail panel between the back window and the trunk lid is wider also. Business or short door: Drive Em
I can't speak for 41 but I have a 42 business coupe with the short doors. It's a someday project. Pretty rough right now.
This is my 46 Ford. Same car as above after being cut, rubbed, lowered and skirted. Sent from my SM-G988U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
