with health situation easing up a bit, many are planning trips - do you ever tow a trailer? ever tow a travel trailer with a classic car/truck? we have a great example on how to do it Thanks to Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz 20210515_035132.jpg 20210515_035202.jpg

Borrowed a copy from the local library. Great for a few laughs, recommend it too.
The old trailers were meant to be hauled by the family car.

Interesting, today people need a one ton pu truck with a 950 ft lbs of torque Diesel engine to pull that trailer ...;)

My father pulled a 32 foot house trailer from Michigan to Seattle in the late 1940s early 50s with a Army jeep.
My mother said he would turn white when the trailer would push him down the mountain. LOL
He told me before he died he had a reoccurring dream of running off the Mountain Road hitting black shale and picking up speed on The Descent.
Oh yeah mother and 4 kids would ride in the trailer on the flat stretches of Road.
After we arrived in Seattle at a Army base just north of the city he flew to Anchorage and my mother poor thing had to drive the Jeep to the port pulling the trailer onto a ferry for the trip to Alaska. She said your dad could talk people into doing things they wouldn't normally do. LOL
He was post engineer of Whittier Alaska.

Watch this movie ! Very Funny IMO. I chased around with race trailers starting in early 50's with parents and into 90's with my deal and without a diesel pickup/enclosed trailer or today's Semi rigs that even all the local racers seem to have. Dad had old tow cars always, stopped at B & B's when they were just old farm houses on the old 2 lane roads, great memories, in my day all the old Ma & Pa motels, always clean and cheap and more than once motel Chevy Van at a wayside LOL, more great memories. This Spring driving home from AZ. we stopped at an old Ma/Pa type motel, this joint was a Cadillac deal in it's day just for Nostalgia/fun, will say it was clean and a step back in time, but we will continue to stay in the new modern chain motels, been having good luck with La Quinta chain, we travel with 2 small dogs. Again watch the Movie, if you/parents ever drug a trailer around it will bring up memories, sure did for me.

We bought a copy of the movie for my MIL, who remembered it as her first date with her late husband. She watched it once and gave it back. So much for gratitude :)

I just recently bought a 1964 - 24' Airstream to pull behind my 53 COE. The truck has a 14-1/2' box, that will allow me to take a topless Hotrod in the back. The combined length, will be under 50 feet. The beauty is, not having to schedule motel rooms, and to be camped in the middle of the action, at events such as Bonneville. Towed race car trailers all over the mid-West. It's not much fun if you forget to flatten the wing on the car. You don't drive very far until you stop and drop the back of the wing.

There is a scene in the Long, Long, Trailer, I think it is where they get stuck, that the Lincoln use to pull the trailer turns into a Mercury. Check it out.

I use a small trailer with my rod but still haven't mastered backing it up!

Neat Story by Rob Word, about a trailer and a '49 Ford. Starts at 1:24
    It just oozes Americana!

Lengthen the tongue; it will make a world of difference. The first utility trailer I built initially had a very short tongue because I thought it looked cool. It was almost impossible to back it up.

I tow a 1961 Safari behind my 48 Chrysler NewYorker, I hardly notice its there. In the original book of the Long Long Trailer this is the same car he used!

My parents pulled a 28 ft. House trailer to Texas (from wis) and back with a almost new 50 mercury when dad was in the Air Force (Korean war time).

Also, if you car has a long overhang from rear axle to hitch it’s harder to back it up. I’ve found cars with short overhangs are easier to back a trailer with. My 61 Belair is a real PIA to reverse a trailer with

I'm thinking of getting one of those. Sell the house put that behind my later suburban and move near the sea. If I can find a farmer that needs some work doing for rent on a shed that would be perfect.

THE SHORT, SHORT TRAILER. Here is my '37 Chevy with our teardrop trailer. I've had the car for decades but we only got the trailer a couple years ago.
