Merry Christmas to you Ron. Hope you have something nostalgic under the tree! I like what you did above with the big 36 coupe and the bigger Willys. I have these two in my collection but they are original. From what I have seen on this thread we have a lot in common with our collections. Love the skirts on the 36. Cheers Alan
Thanks Alan, There's a little story about those. Everything has a story right. lol The year they came out my wife got me one for a Christmas present. A couple days before Christmas Wal-mart put them on sale for 50 percent off. So my good wife took it back to the store, and then got me two. Best Christmas since I was a kid! She also gave me the Willys another year for Christmas too. Then she found me a second Chevy for $10. bucks at a yard sale. Yeah I like playing with my toys, and hard to leave them in the box or stock.lol I'll add a photo of a T bucket that I got as a kid for Christmas. It's the black one. I've painted it sooo many times over the years. The red one looks the way it would've came. I picked it up at a swap meet years ago. Hope Santa brings you a some cool toys this year.{ Merry Christmas } Ron....
Ron, there's nothing like a wife that supports your hobby and interests. My wife doesn't just just pick up something out of the blue but if I see something I dig and hesitate, she'll say "Let's get it, that'll be your birthday present." I think I can speak for others when I say I'm amazed at all you've collected and the different ways you tend to enjoy them.
Only one of these toys had a complete steering wheel when I bought them, so I made new ones for them. Two are Marx, the green one is from the Processed Plastic Co. and the rest are the same model in different colors, fom Saunders. The one that's faded to pink will donate It's wheels to one of the others. I made a new head for the driver who was missing his. It came out looking like a muppet designed by Ed Roth. I'll try to make a better one some day.
Lepus, nice collection, I've got a couple of the Marx hot rods, one is the take-a-part hot rod. I've also got acouple Saunders cars and the blue 83 (decal added at a later date, I'm sure) is an Ideal hot rod. I believe Ideal bought the molds from Saunders. Mick
Great to see all these cool old toys - plus it confirms that I am not the only baby boomer hot rodder out there who must have them all!
Always been a big fan of re-purposing which I probably inherited from my Dad who grew up during the depression. Great job on your steering wheels and other modifications to bring new life to those cool toys. I repaired a broken body and added a few parts bringing new life to a Saunders I had that some people would have probably discarded.
Very cool find. It does have that Chrysler Airflow look. The metal stamping assembly of the body looks similar to a Wyandotte toy. Look over the body for any faint evidence of stamped writing. I had a toy Sedan I could not identify and as I cleaned it, I found small words "Wyandotte Toy Made in USA" on the lower left side of the body. Hopefully you can find or make replacements for the missing grille and tires. I did some more checking after writing this post and found this image for you of a Wyandotte Chrysler Airflow toy.
Yup the axles have the remnants of those wheels. Mine has a heavy layer of likely lead based paint, so not sure how far to go with it. I made this “ improvement “ before I saw your post. For now it’s a taildragger.
I hotrodded this thrift store purchase this week. Canadian tire was the main source for hush thrush mufflers and toronado white lettered tires when I was a kid.
Ron, I love that diner in the background, can you tell me more about it? Sent from my SM-A102U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
ZZ, that's a Timely Turnabout, made by Timely Toys. I have one that was my grandfather's. There is a fifth wheel between the usual 4 that is mounted at 90 degrees to the others, and a little higher so it doesn't usually touch the surface the car is on. The middle wheel and one of the rears are powered by the clockwork motor. The toy is designed to be used on a table. It goes straight until the front wheels drop off the edge of the table, then the middle wheel makes contact, and swings the car around to continue to another edge. My grandfather would amaze me and my brothers with it when we were little. He didn't let us see the underside.
I found it at a Hallmark store years ago. It has a cool neon sign on top, and works nicely with 1/18 scaled cars. Thanks Ron... Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thank you, I would never known that, as there were no markings on the bottom! Love it even more Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
If this is too big of a toy let me know and I’ll post it somewhere else. last Thursday a friend sent me pictures of this Tin Lizzie he had found . Asking me if I’d be interested in it . Yes I said. The fiberglass fenders are broken so I removed them . One of the wooden spoked wheels is in bad shape . Replacements are cast aluminum at $180 apiece so I’m looking at another type of wheel.
