Technical A Plethora of Permatex Products - I'm confused

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Mar 26, 2021.

  1. To be honest I have been using the old tried and true Permatex for everything and never really paid attention as to how many sealers they offer, I have had several tubes in my cabinet and haven't needed to purchase any in a long time but since I was at the auto parts store getting a new thermostat for he wagon I thought I would pick up a new tube just in case what I have has dried out and hard.

Some of you guys use Permatex on a regular basis and I am asking for your opinion, what's the difference in the permatex 1 and permatex 2 and are they for different uses? HRP

  2. Google is your friend. They have comparison charts of all their products on their website that spell out what each product is best for.

  3. I don't doubt that for a second and I will check it out but I put a lot more faith in what actual users have to say, real hot rod guys. HRP

Permatex 1 sets up hard and is good for things like core plugs in the block or heads.

Permatex 2 stays flexible and is good for thermostats and things that you might want to change in the future.

I’ve used Permatex 2 for many years on my thermostat and water pump gaskets and have never had leaks.

Remember when there were only ( I think ) 2 kinds of Loctite?
Red kept my old rigid panhead together.. well, mostly.
    Now I have no idea.
But Danny, there was number 1 and number 2 Permatex seems like about 100 years ago. When I was young, anyway, and you and I are about the same age. I thought you were gonna say they were up to Permatex number 47 now. Y'know, new and improved. Except when it isn't.

"The Right Stuff" ( Permatex) has become popular, probably because of the confusing products out there, and especially for its supposed cure time. After 90 minutes supposed to be able to fill engine with antifreeze/oil or whatever, and go.

I'm never in a hurry to have stuff start leaking, so I usually wait overnight. I will say you can usually learn something by reading the manufacturer .PDF on their bewildering array of different sealants and potions.

When you eventually need to remove the part you installed using " Right Stuff", you won't use it again! Requires extreme care to get the stuff loose without damaging parts.

I use Permatex's anaerobic sealant on many things as well. As well as their spray "high tack" which is great for getting paper Gaskets to stay in place during assembly. It too, gives your fingernails a beautiful red mechanics sheen!

  17. Thank you for the concern, In my area of the upstate just strong storms with a lot of rain and wind but there has been some sever weather & tornado's in portions of the upstate and midlands that caused considerable damage, fortunately we dodge the bullet this go round. HRP

I was told by an old hot rodder over 30 years ago to use ultra copper. I have only used that ever since and have never been disappointed.

Engine parts if i use silicone sealer it is the ultrablack also. Seems to work well on most parts. I have used it on my toilet tank fittings before because I could not get them to seal. Been there for many years and flushes and no leaks.

You can say that again, If you want something permanent go ahead and use the right stuff but if you ever have to open it back up it's the "wrong stuff."

  26. Is this product waterproof also? HRP

I use it on door seals around the house or car like in corners. I put saran wrap where I don't want it to stick and scuff where I do. Put a wade of Ultra black in the corner and close the door. Leave closed for couple days; open and trim excess, remove saran wrap.
