[QUOTE="Bangingoldtin, post: 13950351, member: 357034" Front cross member- to clear the front sump oil pan, notching the member will be required. Although I am probably wrong, I am not aware of a rear sump FE pan.[/QUOTE] Ford actually used a rear sump pan on FE or FT trucks in the '60s, part number C6TZ-6675B, and matching pickup C6TZ- 6622A. This info is from a late '60s magazine article detailing the installation of a 427 into a '57 T-Bird. I was able to buy a new pan and pickup from my local Ford truck dealer back in the '70s and is what I'm using on the 428 in my '40. There are now one or more aftermarket rear sump FE pans available if the truck pan is not found.

That is probably the four wheel drive pan. It is a rear sump , but there is one more part you need to complete this set up.....a special min bearing bolt with small stud coming out of it to bolt the rear pick up to. Your right. Luckily, ARP has a similar main bolt with the small stud. It's not FE specific, but should work with no problems. I think it's for Clevelands or Windsors, just don't remember. I can get the part # if interested.
Thank you, all, especially V8 BOB for the pictures. I was familiar with the 4X4 pan but, I had not seen pictures of it but, I'm hoping to use a front sump pan, I already have a 8 qt pan for it but, have to see if it will fit. I also want to thank Bones, for the HR mag isue. I'm going to look for it, right now.
The block and crank are '70 428 CJ, Scat H-beam rods, .030" over TRW forged pistons, P.O.P reworked new CJ oil pump, custom hydraulic roller from Barry Rabotnick, Morel lifters, Crane 427 style adjustable rockers, custom P.O.P push rods and rocker stands, Edelbrock heads, Performer RPM intake and the stock 735 Holley. Ignition is a new "stock look" Pertronix. Engine is in my run stand, ready for some warmer weather for initial start and break-in with hopefully no issues, then into my '40. Thanks for asking.
I found lots of April '67 HR's on Ebay and ordered one. I'm sure it will take a while to get here by Media Mail.
I would have scanned these earlier but had printer issues. Anyway, here's the article from the April '67 Hot Rod.
Y block motor mounts in stock position the FE will hit the firewall. Turning them 180 degrees will move the motor forward about 2 inches and you are OK.
...dunno...think that you'll have enough grunt for a 40?? I hope that you post a follow-up on the install. Sounds like a killer package.
A treasure trove of info here for the OP. Thanks to everyone for their help. I want to see this '54 on the road!
A bit overkill for a street car, I know. I've known this engine for 50 years and have owned it near 40, so it's kinda special along with the coupe it's going into, which I bought in '65.
I would like to thank everyone. I feel more confident about the fit, after seeing the HR pictures, too. I bought this car a month ago, 400 miles away and because of the weather, I just got it home, 2 weeks ago, today. I started the 361 engine about 3 months ago and it will be a little different. I tore it down, had it hot tanked (horrible slug) and harden seats put in the Ex. 2.09 x 1.66 valves go in it, with some bowl work and light porting. 4.09 bore with a Eagle 428 crank, stock rods and a .040 quench. Cam will be Howard, HFT, 226 @ .050, .600 lift/235 x .593 Ex. I've opened the oil gallery's to 7/16, from the pump, to the top main gallery, full length and match the main bearing feed holes to the bearings. I have the car up on stands, fitting tires and wheels now. I hope to get 245 50 16's (I have those tires mounted but, will replace with 255's) on the back and 225 50 16's on the front. I'm waiting for spacers to get here to see how that goes. I've been working on the tire fit, on the rear for about a week and was wanting to use 15's but, the largest 15, I could fit, was 225 70 15, with a 4 3/16" BS (you can go as much as 5" BS), the 225 60's were shorter than I wanted and 235 may have fit but, with a LOT of work, getting them in and out. BTW, the inside with of the wheel well, is just over 12 1/2". The problem is the distance from the drum to the fender lip. A tire section width of 235, won't go, w/o deflating and a wrestling match. I have a set of 8.5 x 16 wheels, with 6" BS, they have 245 50's on them and out of curiosity (and frustration), I thought I's see how they might go, not figuring they would and they slipped right in the wheel well!! The reason they will go, is that the distance from the inside of the wheel, to the top of the tire, along with the BSing, is short enough, that they side in, UNDER the fender, once in the wheel well, they lift into place and with a 5" BS, they are very centered, with about 1 1/2", to the leaf spring. The 245's will give me a tire diameter of 25.65 and the 255's just over 26". Not quite as tall as I wanted but, it will look good and most of all, fit. I was told that I could get late Mustang, 18" wheels to fit and I can now, see why but, I hate the look of those.
A 361 was listed a 10.5 compression add another 1/2 stroke that compression is in the 11 to 1 range unless you have dished pistons.
361 was a very unique engine, highest compression for Ford products, in 1958. I kept the crank and pistons, to use with a 352 block, if one turns up. The 361, had no valve reliefs with only .008 deck clearance and they were used with the .030 steel shim gasket so, .038 quench. The chamber is fully, machined and not as cast the spec was 69 to 73cc. The '58, HC 352 had the same type pistons and chambers but, .014 deck clearance, with 10.2 CR. The pistons that go with the 428 crank, have valve reliefs and a 15cc dish. Carefully figured, the CR is 9.8 and with my cam, the dynamic CR is 7.9.
The HRM article from 1967 isn’t the one I remember. That one is probably the Wells /Adam 12 car, and could have been a Car Craft article if nobody can track down the story in HRM. I definitely remember the 54 because it was a little rough and ready, not the typical squeaky clean show car typically seen in magazines of the day.
I finally found the CC mag. It is March, '71. The one with MT's, titanium funny car, on the cover. I also found a post by the current owner. In it was the the magazine info, as well as his pictures, when he brought it home and a little history from one of Teds friends. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/information-please.1109754/#post-13511742
Sorry, I don't have that March 1971 Car Craft. Looks like one is available on the big auction site. Phil
I bought one, yesterday, on Ebay but, Wednesday, after finding the thread by the current owner, I found the whole write up, here on HAMB also: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...-car-in-the-past.1045716/page-2#post-13521649 If you dig deep enough, you can find most anything, hot rod related here, on this site
Just found this on the HAMB. I'm putting a 56/57 368 Mercury in my 54 Merc. Was wondering if you knew the motor mount difference between an FE and a MEL? Marty
That is the 4x4 pickup pan- not the FT truck pan. The truck pan has an almost straight bottom ("breadbox") and is 9 qts with filter
368 is a lincoln y block engine.not fe or mel. 57 you can order mercury with ford based 312 yblock or lincoln 368 and far as i know the frame mounts are same. So if you have mounts in place of your 368 and its from 57 mercury, it should drop right in 54.
I really like those engines and wanted to build one but, the parts issue stopped me. One thing I do know, is that they are very heavy. I don't know the answer to that but, if you ask at this part of the forum, I think you can find it: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/social-forums/1952-59-ford-social-group.282/
The block skirt, engine mounts and frame mounts are different on the 1957 MERC 312 and 368. I can provide more info. Do you want it on this thread or do you want to start a separate thread?
