I have a 32 heavy axle for my model A coupe, and 3 sets of split wishbones I could use 32', 36' or 40'. I typically think of 40' bones being the best of the best. It is being setup as a spring over front end, so the 36 look to be the same as the 40s once the front perch is ground down. The 32' bones are much lighter looking. What are some thoughts on which should be used, and why? Thanks Joel Sent from my Pixel 3a using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Any guy who spends the extra money to buy a 32 axle should also care to have the 32 wishbone. The shape is just as important on the wishbone as the axle. Those in the know, know.
I prefer the look of the yoke on the ‘32 ‘bones, the top is more slender and better looking. If you use the ‘36 ‘bones then the opening of the yoke is 2 inches and that matches the thickness of your ‘32 axle but you will need to mill the top of the yoke and re-machine the 60* seat for the spring perch deeper. Aftermarket perches have longer shanks and would work but I think it looks better with the top of the yoke reduced in height. Your ‘40 ‘bones need the same modifications as the ‘36 set you have but in addition you will need to shim the axle to yoke as the ‘40 ‘bones will have a 2 1/4” opening in the yoke.
Use the '32 bones with the '32 axle. '32 bones look 100x better than '36 or 40's for so many reasons. As long as they aren't rusted from the inside out, they will be plenty strong. That is unless you want to sell me the '32 bones cheap, then use the '36 .
Thanks guys. I will run a bore scope down the inside to check for rust, then keep the 32 bones with the axle. Sent from my iPad using H.A.M.B.
Another vote for the 32 bones. Just makes sense to use the ones that work with the heavy axle in my opinion.
Wishbones have a very traditional look. Keep in mind, they do impact your turning radius. Cool always has a price!
