I see a lot of professional shops using a plastic to mask off doors etc. Is there a technical name or a brand name for that? I have been using drop cloths and that is for the birds.

    Thanks

Does the sticky stuff leave any kind of residue when you pull it off?

  4. Not if it isn't on there forever. It's more for cars that have glass broken and that sort of thing. To keep out weather. Masking plastic is treated on one side to adhere paint, so your overspray doesn't flake off and ruin your paint job. That's why it's marked "paint this side" when you unfold it

Anybody who works on cars should have a roll of this. Keeps the dust off as well as overspray. I have had mine for 5 years and still haven`t used it all yet. Something like $70 dollars at O`Reilys. One of the few things I buy there. A real timesaver.

I didn't know that existed. Found it for 37.00 at Advanced Auto. Looks like price may depend on where you shop.

  15. Very true. I wish i had a quarter for every car I've taped up with newspapers, but it took so dang long! I get 2 rolls of masking paper, 18"wide, for $20!

I've always wondered on those that "cling" like the above plastic.

When I think plastic and cling I think static electricity which then takes me to attracting dust to my paint job.

  17. I use it to cover the entire car, minus a fender, or door etc... but the plastic i use doesn't do that "sucking to the body cling thing" like some other stuff I've used. I understand what you're saying though. I go all clean freak before i paint. And out of habit, i still spray the floor before i spray any paint. I'm superstitious, don't need no bad ju-ju in the shop because i broke tradition :D

  18. Hell I still hook the chain from the car to the floor!!!

  20. Man i ran a glass route for years, and most of my stops were bodyshop's. Got to know all of them, but only one or two of them still used the chain, or had even heard about it! I was taught by old guys, 35 years ago. And I still do everything the same way

Area you folks talking about the stuff used for masking? My kids friend who's going to paint her car talked about a "wrap" thing, instead of masking it all off. .

I just nodded and said "ok"

  24. I always call it masking plastic when I order it. I usually comes in rolls of different width's and lengths. I buy the 20 ft wide version but to do low cars you just need the standard width [15'?] DSCF4984.JPG DSCF4005.JPG DSCF0007.JPG DSCF0001.JPG

I believe most of that stuff is two sides and says "Paint this side" on it. I'm told the static is supposed to keep the paint dust ( airborne from your last coat) off of the painted surface and it sticks to the "paint this side" surface. Way faster than paper for a large section.

I love this stuff. Like has been said, it is meant to attract the stray dust so it doesn't land in your wet paint. I sometimes tape a big piece of it on the booth wall too attract dust (and it does) away from the car. Always use a sharp "new" razor blade when cutting this stuff. It's just very thin plastic but if your blade is dull you might as well use a chainsaw (Ha!).
