Have built a bunch of 40's (13-14) but all were ground up etc. Chevy 327,auto and 8" rear. Just found one to play with. It is a nice old coupe with fresh stock running gear and a Columbia--runs sweet and Columbia works as well. Kinda hate to tear this one apart. May play with it for a while as is then decide. Would be fine to cruise around locally. Considered a 283 with stock running gear as well. Oh well-something to do during the Covid lockdown

Photos sunday--it's a stocker for now! But I will play with it a bit and decide which way to go. As mentioned earlier my 40 deluxe went east in July after many years. Was having 40 withdrawals!

If it's running good and drivetrain is fresh why change it unless you want more power? Maybe a set of Ardun heads and tripower. 283 is not bad either.

  8. I'd sell a body part or two for an unmolested car like that. Streetrod it and I'd barely even stop to glance at it.

Decisions? Has a dropped axle and may play with a few things and leave it for a while as is. Arduns WAY out of my league!!
Last flathead I had was in 66-drove it for a couple of years as my go to work rig-37 Ford pickup-never let me down-traded it for a 50 Olds 88 club coupe.
In 65 a friend I knew came home for the weekend in a real nice 40 Deluxe coupe. When they had to get back to Navy base in San Diego it would not start. Got my dad to loan me $300 and he took the dist off and took it home-brought it back and it fired right up! Sold for $400! Wow -big profit.

Heck, I’m not that far away from you, how about I give you 1/2 of what you payed for it and eliminate any headaches? ;)

My guess is you’ll do something right with it that serves it well.

  12. My coupe has a flattie with a pickup open drive trans. 3:00 8" rear end lets it run 70-75 on flat land easily.
    Just another option.

I think the 283 with stock drivetrain is a great idea, There is something about shifting a 40 trans that makes me smile every time I drive mine. 40's are wonderful old cars that really drive beautifully in stock form but can benefit from a small increase in the HP department, I say go for it!!!!

As said--I have not been without a 40 for many years. Have had many that we built and drove-my friend Joe has 4 we did-3 coupes (two stds and one deluxe) and a sedan-all nice cars-all 327's auto's etc. Sold mine at a weak moment-it was a wonderful car. So here we go again.

Yep and many have passed thru here over the years but wife always preferred the cloud mist deluxe over the others to drive etc. It was #4 of 14-15. #2 and #3 were also cloud mist grey-a nice pair- a coupe and a convert.

Tim, back in the Summer when you told me you were selling your '40 I knew it would wind up with you getting another:cool: Question wasn't if, it was when:)
The "3 on the tree" and the Columbia rear will be great till you decide to "teach that smart aleck young punk in the rice burner with the fart can exhaust a lesson" at the red light:eek: Just wait till you get it in 3rd before you get frisky!

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg Tim, only thing I can help you with are the wiper towers , LOL. I no you can make it another one of yours ( judging pictures never seen better) . I'd say drive and enjoy the way it is .I think you'd find another not quite as complete or done to do your magic to. Drove my flatty 2150 miles round trip Md to Missouri and back after Dale reworked it for me . You deserve a flatty and Columbia rear !!! That's the cats meow !!
