Here is the Grant in my el Camino. Grant wheels have always been available. They fit nice and have a great feel especially with a Lee 14:1 steering box that gives excellent feedback..

This is the stock Austin steering wheel from my Austin gasser. I fitted it to the new steering system, and because of the tiny outer grip feeling too small I wrapped it with clothesline cord. Did it a decade ago, so it's kinda grungy now, but I sort of like that too.

And this old Pontiac wheel from the early 50's came with my '39 Chev coupe. Top of the horn ring was broken, and wheel was cracked. So I repaired the wheel, and cut off the rest of the horn ring, and smoothed it off flush. Then painted it to match the dash color of my '39 Chev.

  18. I needed a vintage Cragar steering wheel for my Mysterion clone but they aren't made any longer and I have never seen one show up on ebaY. I solved the problem by getting a Moon 4-holer and cutting out the web between 3 holes with a slitting disk on my 4 1/2" grinder.

Cragar wheel next to mock up of Ed's wheel. Looked like it would work.

  19. Another oddball wheel problem I faced. I wanted a late model tilt steering column for my '53 Chevy truck build but since the theme was a 'factory stock' king cab I wanted the '53 wheel and 3-on-the-tree shifter. I discovered that the splines on the tilt shaft and in the old wheel were identical. All I had to do was cut off some of the bakelite on the old wheel, cut a sheet metal disk to bonso to the wheel to transition to the round shape of the new column and they matched up great. Horn button pass-through hole was even in the right place.

For the shifter, I just cut off the late model knob, ground the shaft to a taper that slit up into the old shift handle and filed the tilt column rivet boss until the old shift handle rivet holes lined up. The slipped the handle over the shaft and install the rivet.

Model A ford 7 spline. I machined the hub from the original wheel. Welded to a laser cut adapter. It retains the model A switch.

There are only two traditional hot rod steering wheels for Fords in my opinion. The 40 deluxe wheel is in my 40. The 39 deluxe is in my roadster/avatar. IMG_3138.JPG IMG_3784.JPG
