Not really an early oval track car but my replica of a '30s era champ car, replete with an inline crossflow headed six:

Opp in Al Hamilton's Maxwell built car,

That was one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen.

  8. Danny Oakes qualifying Dad's first Kurtis at Balboa Stadium, late 1945. This car was KK chassis #4.

  11. Dad, again leading a heat race, Orange Show Stadium, San Bernardino, Ca. late 1946. He didn't get a grill built for the car until early 1947. No time for that. He was working nights, and racing 6 to 7 days a week.

  13. Me, Tulare Thunder Bowl, Summer, 1990, in the Kurtis V8-60 I restored. I ran with the WRA for 3 years, then sold the car to Ron Leslie, the son of Roy Leslie (Kenz & Leslie).

  14. Great history, Jack was a tough driver, I remember him from my youth. I am sure my dad saw this car run and even raced against them.

  15. Hank Albers and Don Mack in the first pic. Hanks newer car in the second when my dad crewed for him. Dad also hot lapped this car at least once that I know of. Hank is in the North Dakota Racing Hall of Fame

I really have to ask : Are those dual plug heads on the 241 hemi? Had I not seen this picture, I would have thought that those are up there in rarity with unicorns and hen's teeth.

Do you have any more information on them?

Are we talking about the no. 75 modified? I only see 4 plug wires.

Now that I blew the picture up and looked closer, it appears that what I thought were a couple of the upper row of plugs seem to be breathers. It's sometimes hard to tell with these old pictures.

You're right. Jan Opperman was a very religious individual. I never heard him referred to as "The Preacher" as this drawing depicts. (?)

  22. Steven Danish's car. Steve was the 1953 New York state NASCAR sportsman champion, and raced and won the Blue Flame Chevy sixes until the mid 1960s.

He and his crew came to the races in match uniforms back in the early 1950s!

Note the number the NASCAR win stickers above the rear window on his 1953 car

He is like 81 years old...he just sent me the original helmet he wore when that old picture was taken. The old picture is from 1963. The driver was J B Davis...the car ran at Old Bridge Speedway and Fort Dix Speedway...he actually ran this a couple more years part time until the 1966 season. He told it would run great down the straightaways but did not like to turn left very well....(car is for sale if anybody is interested in it)...

  24. We had this discussion 15+ years ago on the board when a vintage HAMB style stock car class was proposed and my .02 was that tracks needed to bring back "whites", that is white pants and or uniforms. Used to be you could not get into the pits without whites. Todays racers look like a bunch of crumb bums.

The great Herschel McGriff, in his racing uniform. Note the Olds hubcaps, perhaps they were of his 50 Olds. ht29.jpg

1960/61 came the new trick for our local super mods, add of wings. Hot hot hot dog was Rod Perry" The Black Bandit's" nick name' as 2 cars were same built by Bob Hamke an both Black. Erne Reve's drove the other.
Close to unbeatible team, but my hero Mel Payne #30 would do it some times.
