Drive-in restaurants were invented in 1921 in Dallas when Kirby's Pig Stand opened on the old Dallas-Fort Worth Highway. Eventually there were 130+ Pig Stands. Last closed in 2006.

    Someone should re-spin that franchise.

ETA: The last one I remember was located across the intersection of Northwest Highway and Abrams Road in Dallas across from Keller's Drive-In (since 1958) where hot-rodders still gather. The ONLY place in Dallas you can "legally" stand outside your car and drink beer ("grandfathered").

"TitleMax" in the background was originally (1980) a great dive strip joint called Baby Dolls (aka Baby Dogs).

    J.
Just order a set of French Fries & have the cook add gravy over the top and you’ll have em once again. The Broiler will cook up whatever is in reason for a hungry hombre. ;). Coincidentally The Clock & Harvey’s both made “Gravy Fries” as did Henry’s & Carpenter’s Drive-In’s.

According to Texas Monthly article about Pig Stands that restaurant was formerly an original Pig Stand that closed, the building was bought by a former employee and re-opened under the Pig Stand name after the franchise shut down.

I will visit and dine on my next San Antonio trip.

On October 19, 2009 the “Saved & Rebuilt Harvey’s Broiler”opened to a large crowd of locals and beyond awaiting grub from a new entity in the instantly recognizable name of “Bob’s Big Boy” but now with a “Broiler” monicker flanking it’s signage back from the days of “ Harvey’s & Johnie’s”.
Seems like last week, but 13 yrs have cleared and starting the 14th now. If I count from the demo-date , that’s 15-nearly 16 years come January 7, 2023.
It’s been rough @ times, great too, but that’s how all of our lives go, Happy Anniversary to “The Broiler” All roads lead to it. 5B8F1E54-8809-4FF2-84A8-302F271085CA.jpeg 68E6B40F-9CD4-4B89-9599-97E30A5B3052.jpeg DF79290E-0490-4B1E-9FB7-ABBC31BE8466.jpeg

    This “The H.A.M.B’s Broiler-save”.
I went back and read what I said when I started this thread.

As I drove past this building on the way to the foundry where I had our Aluminum casting performed back in 2002 right when my cruise spot and so many others cruise spot was then turned into a low end used car lot, I said right then & there that I wouldn’t rest until it was back to what it was supposed to be & designed as.
Spent the 23rd of December there eating a “Big Boy” burger and reflecting on just what has transpired since that fateful afternoon on Jan 7, 2007. 15 years later here still stands what we all created, Thank you “H.A.M.B. Family” for making what I thought about in Jan 2002 a reality.
    Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!
