Made it to Dewey. Tomorrow, we convoy to the Daryl Starbird museum.

    More "small stuff".

The idle keeps hanging - the relay shaft (connects the gas pedal linkage to the carburetor linkage) was binding. When I got under the hood, the welded arm was rubbing against the pivot bushing. I could hear it squeak. Moved the adjustable arm over about 1/4 inch.

Thanks to Travis (TooTallOkie) for providing the needed 3rd hand.

Better, but still sticky. Went to a auto parts store and bought a can of $uper$lipery$pray$tuff. Soaked the linkage - seems OK now - at least for about 4 miles...

Air/fuel ratio (AFR) is super lean - 16:1, 17:1, off scale.

Not a fuel supply problem, it I accelerate hard (open the secondary), the AFR goes rich - 10:1, 11:1.

    2 potential problems:

    1. Carb is 4 years old - trash in the primary side.

    2. Carb was sized for a 1.8 Liter motor. The replacement Ebay motor is 2 Liter block with a "mystery" stroker crank. Probably needs a larger primary jet.

    3. I'm not really proud of the temporary fix - it will get me home. Pull the choke out and watch for a good reading on the AFR gauge.

I made it, staying at my Fairfield.

I've watched some of builds, would like to hear more.

Have not seen the grandkids lately, would like to feed your crew.

PM with phone number to follow.

Found the problem, carb lose on studs. 1/2 inch open end wrench did the trick.

Light mist, museum trip still on.

  4. I always pat myself on the back when a problem is resolved, probably need a kick in the butt for not finding it sooner.
    Glad you had the wrench.:)

Thanks - Just drove to the museum. Status downgraded to 1/2 fixed - Good enough to drive it back to Arizona.

Midnight, a couple of wonderful days. This old man is just about out of steam.

Friday night, dinner theater. Super folks, wonderful food and 2 in depth car documentaries.

Saturday was the show, I had a super time, met lots of folks, saw many interesting cars (Kars?). Let me restate that, ALL the Kars were interesting!

The kustom konference (a little shaky on the exact name and spelling) was a chance learn how folks got into the hobby (obsession?) and differing approaches to Kustomizing.

Followed by the awards at 3PM.

HOLY POOP, the Volvo got the Koolest Kruiser award. Totally blew me away. Really wish I could post a picture, it is a very unique hand lettered award.

Mechanical carnage continues, maybe Karnage is a better description...

    Gotta grab some sleep.

Next up: How I almost had to use my new fire extinguisher. And a heartfelt THANK YOU to all the KOOL KATS who jumped in to help me.

  11. If you can view the HAMB on your phones web browser(like Chrome?) it's dead simple to load pics.
Good luck on your return trip and looking forward to your pics!

Didn't get to meet you, but enjoyed checking out your ride. Had to be the coolest gas cap there.

Thanks to all the help last night, a trouble free 400+ miles today. Sitting in the Big Texan Steak Ranch, home of the 72 Ounce Free Steak - you have eat it (and about 3 pounds of sides) in an hour. I ordered a steak quesadilla.

After the show, I filled the gas tank, then then drove to the hotel.

    "Hey Russ, I smell gas!

Looked under the Volvo, gas was streaming off of the drive shaft. A WTF moment...

I reached under and closed the ball valve.

A quick apology to all that helped - I have a bit of "Old Timers", don't remember names...

Food is here, to be continued.

Decided to take the Clovis, Roswell, White Sands route. The engine is doing 4,000 RPM at 75, this route has lower posted speeds. Also shorter than I-40 to I-25.

Thanks for the offer, with the help of Travis (TooTallOkie), we got the linkage problem fixed.

When I get home, I'll send you a message about mailing that book.

Instant help, a floor jack showed up. Someone lived nearby, ran home and got 2 jack stands. (DAMN, I wish I could remember names...). 2 of us crawled under (extra eyes are a good thing). The fuel return line (1/4 inch nylon air line) was rubbing against the drive shaft. Wore through.

The fix was under the hood - eliminated the return line by replacing the 3 spigot (in, out, return) fuel filter with a 2 spigot. Also bought a bag of zip ties and a diagonal cutter.

I am super grateful for all the help.

400+ trouble free miles today - Well, except for having to reach under and turn the ball valve back on [sigh].

Thanks, the Kustom crew are the greatest folks.

I've stopped worrying about the Volvo and gone back to searching for the next rest room [wink].

Rest Area, Cochise County, AZ. Only 127 miles from home. Almost within the AAA 100 mile tow radius.

Oil pressure numbers went random, had this problem with the speedometer 2 weeks ago. Consider this my punishment for installing a NON-TRADITIONAL Jegs digital 5 Guage assembly (what a piece of crap).

Off in search of an all beef truck stop dog.

Oil level was OK, topped off with 20W50 for good luck.
