Technical Early 1932 Ford banjo rebuild

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by HaroldDegand, Aug 24, 2020.

  1. Hi, I'm rebuilding the banjo of my 1932 Ford.
It's an early model, like a Model A.
I need info's from guys who did it yet.

I followed Tom Endy's Tech articles on Santaanitaas.org and got some questions.
    https://www.santaanitaas.org/tom-endys-tech-articles/

    1) He's setting the bearing preload and the backlash, but what about the pinion depth ?
    2) How do you measure the backlash ? on the bearing preload adjusting nut ?
    3) To avoid damage on the threads of the drive shaft, can I set the pinion without the shaft fitted ?

    Thanks for your replies !

On mine I had to put a shim behind the rear pinion bearing , in front of the pinion gear, to move it back toward the ring gear more. Because even without any gaskets ( shims) on the right axle housing there was still way to much back lash between the ring & pinion.

The internet is actually good for DIY projects. I call it Hotrod porn. Here's a YouTube clip. there's others also.

  4. Thx Solidaxle.
I’ve watched all the vids and all the threads I could find.
But unfortunately they never show how to set a backlash or pinion depth on a banjo axle. that’s why I ask here.

Normally on the early 32 or Model A you do not set pinion depth. As xix said, if there is too much backlash you can shim pinion.
You can check backlash by putting a dial indicator on a ring gear tooth through the oil fill and moving ring gear back and forth with a screw driver.

  7. Thx Aaron. Very interesting.
So backlash is measured on the splines and not on the ring gear.
