Technical What kind of front axle is this?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by totalautomation863, Aug 10, 2020.

  1. So I got my hands on this coupe from my dad in hopes to finish his forgotten project up. It has a unknown make/model front axle on it and it needs brakes... i have no calipers. The rotors are there and brackets. Thought maybe you guys might know or have ideas how to figure out what I got so I know what I need to complete this car. Any info is very much appreciated.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

  2. Possibly a Ford F-1 axle.

It doesn't look too safe, how is the axle attached to the frame? HRP

  3. Yes, Ford truck axle/spindles/steering.
    Scrub radius real bad.

  4. A parallel leaf truck axle converted to a transverse.
The best option would be to sell it and install a real transverse spring axle.
I will admit it’s brackets for the axle are built better than most of those I have seen.

  5. If this is the bracket

    then these are the calipers

should be gm intermediate car. The other guys here could narrow it down

How about a side view of the front axle and frame to the rear of the axle. Interested in what it has, or not, for radius rods or hairpins to control the axle. Can't say that the John Deereish green speaks hotrod to me. And can't believe I said that because green is my favorite color and I do have a JD bulldozer.

    That's an F-1 axle. 48 - 52.

  11. Caliper brackets look like old 70's Superbell/P&J.

Looks like Ford Econoline to me. Spindles for sure.

  14. The measurement for the caliper mounting holes will help
    7 -1/16 for late 60s to 77ish gm midsize.
    5 -1/2 for 78 to late 80s metric gm

Trash the front end, you'll save $,by getting a normal front end from some one like speedway or other rod shop.
Really, whats there is kind of make do from junk and cost more to make it work an look right then it will cost for new right stuff an new will look right vs mismatch patched together.. Sure a few have made truck stuff work, but it never looks very good to most others.

The caliper mounts are Magnum, they take gm metric calipers.

Totally agree about swapping it out for "conventional" hot rod gear. That might as well have no front spring for all the good it's doing.

there is very little for that spring to work before it hits the mount.

    this looks problematic as well

Actually I was looking at the spring itself; it's so short it might as well just be a steel bar.

Not Econoline, they had bolt on arms, both sides.

Time to start over with a better front end design and save the bottom of that grille shell.

The caliper brackets look to take 68 to 71 mustang calibers and hard ware. The rubber bushings and anti rattle clips do not belong to any gm product i have seen images.jpg

  23. That's why I thought early 70's Superbell/P&J

  24. Sorry fellas had a long day yesterday. This is a glass bodied car my dad started building out of junk he had laying around. I agree with yall about it needing a new setup up front. I think I'll end up ordering a kit for it here soon.

  25. Its a 32 5 window glass body on a totally homemade frame and suspension. Would love to finish it and get it right along the way. Alot of stuff I would have done differently but no telling my dad anything. He gave up on it when my mom got sick. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Theres alot of potential there I think it needs a little going through and you'll have a car that you can enjoy and maybe take your Dad for a ride. A conventional Ford front end will be alot more straight forward but it seems you realize that already.

    ^^^^^ my thoughts also.
may I just add that that spring looks really thick and heavy ( also short as already mentioned) so don’t be tempted to keep it if you replace the axle with a more traditional ford type axle.

Ummm.....I'd go right through that car, nothing would look the same, its one of those cars that LOOK like it was pieced together with no money ever spent on it. Tear it down and rebuild it into what your dad wasn't able to do....make him happy.

  29. Just don’t use the goofy looking chopped grill shell for a channeled car.
thats the only part that sux on Milner’s 32
