I don’t think off brands are Olds, studebakers, Buick’s, etc. I’m thinking like first post mentioning Stevens-Duryea. How about a Dort or the 100’s of manufactures just before the depression. I believe that’s what the writer was looking for. I’d guess many would come from the museum storage rooms because they are not “good enough” to be out shown.
Hot Rodders will cut up anything and many it faster and stop..

Most of my cars are belly buttons, but I love going to Back to the 50's in Saint Paul, with over 10,000 64 and older cars there, you see stuff you forgot they even built. I spend the whole weekend looking for those cars and when I find them I sit and build them in my head. The right rake, wheels and tires. paint, to chop or not to chop and suddenly a forgotten fugly looking car could be awesome. My cousin Donnie had a 61 American wagon in 69 for his first car. Double ugly and twice as uncool , but I got some pretty cool ideas stored in the old brain box for one now! lol Larry

I really dig the Canadian versions of American cars.

  9. I am not real brand conscious. There are cars and trucks that I prefer, but they are often brands that I will never own. I usually build or drive (or both) whatever is available. That has put me into some interesting combos. Some of them marginally acceptable I am sure.

Basically if you see me going fast it is likely going to be in a car or truck that no one is going to give a second glance. No real reason to run the list, think of something that you would not be caught dead in and that is where you will find me.

It was no longer a Stearns-Knight.when this picture was taken. The owner/builder worked with me at UAL. When the Knight sleeve valve engine broke a sleeve, he put in a nail head. 401 I think. He drove it all over the place and eventually installed a BBC. 454 I think. Nice car. Very nice.

  11. Indeed. I first saw the car when I was 12 years old.

  14. Seems like when I was a hot rodder in the '50's, anything other than a Ford was off-brand.:D

Here's an off brand Willys. Actually a Plymouth coupe with a Willys nose. It fooled a lot of people even a real Willys owner one time until I pointed out the differences. img002.jpg

Maybe not O.T. here, but my great Grandfather was a wagonmaster in 1860s, drove a 6-oxen team pulling a Conestoga wagon. Yep. A STUDEBAKER Conestoga.
His route was from St. Joseph, Missouri to Seattle, Wash.
Thought you guys should know I'm NOT 'all Ford'... LOL

I always thought these Opel Records would make a great miniature version of the old Highway Patrol Buick's from the old TV show.

The early wide track Model T Ford was very popular in the South. It had the same track as the Studebaker wagons and fit the roads really well.

My second car I built in high school after my 28A-roadster, was a $75 used Henry J. in 1960. But could not just drive it,had to custom a little at a time, starting with adding Olds Rocket 88 for power.. It was in Car Craft mag Jan 1963 HenryJ at DinnerKey.jpg

I always wondered if this one ever had a magazine feature. I think this is the only photo I have seen.
