Hey all. I will preface tho6s with I do not have much knowledge on an inline. I have a '39 Chevy 2 door sedan. I have a bone stock 250" 6-banger a 700R4 an 8.5" w/ 3.73 gear and a 235/75r15 (roughly 28-29") tire. I'd love some suggestions for an intake, cam, carb size? I already planned on an HEI and have checked out tom Langdon and tom lowe sites and would like to see how far off base I am with what's worked in the real world. I do know this wont be a rocket. Thanks

About 25-30 years ago I built a healthy 250. I used the biggest cam Clifford had at the time, a 194 head with upgraded valves for compression, a set of dual shortie headers and made my own intake for 3 stock 1 BBLs. I didn't have it geared properly, but once it got moving it ran really well!

Today if I was to do something similar, I would go looking for a cam with .050 duration in the 20-something range, build it with a stock head for more reasonable compression and buy a 4 bbl intake manifold. Holley offers a 390 cfm carb and I think Edelbrock makes a small one too.

Personally, I'd back it with a manual trans, a Saginaw has ratios that will work well with the old 6, and probably a 3.08 gear.

I agree on the trans. Just working with what I've currently got. Wouldn't be opposed to a t5 for it.

The 700R4 is a great choice as it's got a very low 1st gear that's almost identical to the T5 trans. You wont gain anything going to a T5 unless you just want a stick to shift.
