Working on a project and want to take the steering column of the steering box .
    It is a 40 Ford steering box/column .
Somebody have some info about how to take the column off and then have a u-joint between the steering box and steering column .
So i will use the same column in the car .

  2. I just cut my shaft, left 4” on the box and machined it for 3/4” DD.

One piece wheel to box. Is this from a car and if so are you keeping the column shifter?

There is no shifter on the column .
But maybe it has been removed earlier .

Probably from a truck with a floor shifted box.

The worm gear is pressed onto the shaft inside the steering box.

The shaft has a hole in it. Originally for the horn rod or wiring. If you cut it down there's not enough meat to machine for a double D without possibility of collapse.

Hi, I did this on my 47 pickup column, just tapped tube & threaded a bolt into it, then ground down to fit double d joint.

Sure but the hole is a convenient place to run the horn wire.
