If often wondered what it would take to buy an aftermarket body and build a car like this. Original 56/57 cars are pretty scarce an expensive. Then there would be even less fear/worry (not that there is that much now) of driving the heck out of it. When you have to pay $50-60k and up for something it does become a little harder to beat on it.

And I couldn't abide those rear wheel openings. Or am I messing with history?

  9. Big John Mazmanian style cutouts with rounded corners

  11. Big John had a cool Vette but those amateur looking wheel openings are still horrible all these years later.

I agree, those wheel cutouts are horrible. I don't care that it was how Big John did it back then, if I owned the car today I would either round them off or put a mild flare on them.

Back to the top. Did the show run long enough to update
    the cars?

Well now that Mazmanians Vette has been brought up..here's some shots from a magazine from my collection.
    Also some shots of his driver ,63 Sting Ray, at the time. 20200408_203450.jpeg 20200408_203513.jpeg 20200408_203545.jpeg 20200408_203555.jpeg 20200408_203609.jpeg 20200408_203628.jpeg 20200408_203637.jpeg 20200408_203656.jpeg 20200408_203735.jpeg 20200408_203742.jpeg

    Yes, I remember a '63 and maybe a '66. Guess I imagined the '66, the show ended in '64.

From "Hot Rod" magazine, September 1964 coverage of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb! Sorry, it's a little grainy. pp.jpg

Even as a kid seeing this car and the enlargement of the wheel openings, it just looked crude and hurried. Just not the gorgeous finish of his previous drag cars that he was known for. Going balls out fast and looking stunning in the process!!

I agree , it’s a hideous cut job. I sold that rear pair of 16” Torque Thrusts to Steve Hendrickson when he was restoring the original car.

31: the one with strips is a ‘61, the big slicks (Paris Fish) one is a ‘62. Check the vent trim, in the coves.
