    Hey everyone

I am a new member and not sure where to post this.

I am looking to buy a car in South Carolina however the person selling it just has a bill of sale and NO title.

Wonder how I can obtain a title.

    Thanks
    Cliff

Laws vary from state to state, so your best bet would be to go to the courthouse and talk to the nice ladies down there. And read the rules and do an intro if you're going to hang around. It will save you a little wear and tear and confusion. Welcome to the HAMB.

Yep, depends on the state you want to title it in. Some are doable, some aren't.

I live in Ohio. I bought a car in Alabama with no title. They don’t have titles for older cars. My title office had me obtain a signed, notarized bill of sale with the VIN and it was no problem getting an Ohio title.

Why rely on opinions, contact your state's D.O.T....they make the rules.

Check the local/state rules-don't buy it if you can't get a title first

In Missouri, the DOT (MoDOT) has nothing to do with titles. It is the Department of Revenue (DOR).

I wanted to see if anyone has had experience.

I cannot spend much time on this since I am still working so I wanted to see what I could get first

  15. My reply is bases on experience as a resident of South Carolina, I have went through the nightmare of trying to get a title on 2 different cars, after applying for a bonded title you have to keep receipts as you work on the car or truck, it can take as much as 2 years.

If the person selling the car was the owner and it was licensed & driven they can apply for a lost title. HRP

Interesting. But, only rules in South Carolina are relevant

Thank you all very much again very helpful information. I appreciate everyone's feedback

  19. Sometimes it is best to know the options before you start asking questions. Knowing the options sometimes enables you to guide the conversation. The local DMV probably doesn't do many cars this old. But as you say in the end they make the rules.
