Quick y-block question. When hand turning the engine at the damper bolt, should the starter be racheting? New starter. Haven't had engine running yet. Thanks, Ned
No problem! The starter drive is engaged. When you start the engine it will kick out. The starter, usually is delivered with the starter drive disengaged. Makes installing the starter easier. But sometimes folks play with it and lock it in the drive mode. The only way to disengage it is to spin the stater with the starter drive, fast enough to disengage. Some starters, built like this are a bugger to disengaged. I have seen guys put the stater drive up against a bench grinder with a wire wheel to disengage the bendix. Not recommending this, just saying I saw someone do it! It can be dangerous! Bones
