After over a year lurking in the shadows of this site and learning quite a bit (thanks to all) I decided today to sign up and ask a question I plan to do my first valve grind job on a straight 8 flathead (Packard) and a couple days ago I picked up a Hall Toledo Valve Seat grinding kit. I haven’t been able to find much information on how to use this tool and I am wondering if anyone has any experience with it and knowledge to share? I’ve attached some pics as a reference and also the only YouTube video I’ve found that really shows it in action https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=aUYbuCxwENo
Nice looking seat grinder. Way back in the day, I worked in a Chevrolet dealership and did a lot of valve jobs. The old 216/235/261 stovebolt 6cyls. needed valve jobs on a pretty regular basis. I never did seat resurfacing on flathead stuff. I did lots of OHV fours......sixes.....V/8's. We had a nice Black and Decker valve grinder also. I was able to find an pretty nice Black and Decker a few years ago. I hope to get it running this summer and "practicing" on some old valves. I use the term "practicing" in order to maybe give you a little old-timer advice. Before you start working on your straight eight, I would strongly recommend that you find some scrap flathead blocks of any brand, size or configuration to practice on. When you are learning your machine, you are very likely to make mistakes and have a giant "Oops" moment. I would not want to see you ruin your block or see you have to get a machine shop involved to repair or put all new seat inserts in. Have fun
hey @tractorguy, thanks for stopping by! I really appreciate the words of wisdom to practice before digging in to my engine - I plan to use the engine I am pulling out of my car which is the same straight 8 I am putting in but very tired. I’m actually going to use the one I am pulling as a test bed for other things as well. At the end of the day I’ll either have another nicely running spare or have learned a few lessons I really found a honey hole when I went to buy this grinder and scored a bunch of old school tools some of which I had never even seen before. thanks again for taking the time! Jason
Get in touch with the local flat head ford/Packard cubs. I am sure someone there will know how to use it and probably has. Mike
I can give you some idea on a few of the arbors in the box. From the left the second and third are for the Ford Flathead the smaller one is for the small V-8 sixty Flathead the larger is for the standard size block. The kit you have is extremely primitive to do the valve work with. Considering this will be your first ever valve job and its being done on a Packard you would do yourself a favor if you could practice first on a junk block. Ronnieroadster
I got a little time behind this grinder - unfortunately we have a mandate in Los Angeles due to Covid-19 and are being ordered to not leave the house unless for essential items so I had to come up with alternatives for Prussian blue and a #2 pencil
