So I recently purchased a flathead and it has an 81 cast in the front but would like to know what year it may be. I found the following stamped on the front top of the intake deck.

    Any help would be appreciated?

That number means nothing. Show us a good pic of the front face, and one of the bellhousing area.

To expand on what "alchemy" posted, the stamp shown was most likely done by an engine rebuilder and has no relation to the original production by Ford. The photos he suggested are what are needed.

  7. As Tubman says, rebuilder likely stamped his (or his shops') initials and the date - July 19th, 1952.

So a '38 block would be a 24 stud, but probably the beginning of the freeze plugs in the pan rail, right?

OP, does yours have the plugs in the machined surface of the pan rail?

Yes, there are four holes on the machined surface of the oil pain rails. It is 24 stud as well.

    It's a 38 (39) through 41ish flathead.
