Folks Of Interest Screws in reverse smoothie wheels?why?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by iwanaflattie, Jan 11, 2020.

  1. Hi.
I was too excited to buy these reverse smoothies that i didnt see the screw holes on the bead rim.
    Why would anyone do that?
So the tires dont fall off?
6 in the ones with the slicks and 4 in the ones with no tires.

Being slicks, maybe to keep the tires from spinning on the rim...

It's done in drag racing a lot so the rims don't spin inside the tires if you have a lot of torque.

Most of the time it's just copycat of what the "pros" do...they aren't need on most cars. But it impressed the kids at the drive in during the 1970s-80s.

the holes will not hurt anything, they will not leak air there. If you weld em, then they will need to be re chromed..... btw those are not chrome reverse wheels. they are commonly known as chrome smoothies (note there are no vents between the ctrs and the rim)

JC Pennys slicks! those are rare.

  10. Put sheet metal screws in them when the tires are on and look macho.

Because of this. But chances are they where for looks.
Just put some fancy screws in the holes and play the tough guy part

Fast cars these days use beadlock wheels, not screws in the rim.

Put screws in with red Loctite. Cut off the excess on the inside, being careful to not generate too much heat, spin the screw, or gouge the lip.

That was probably done just about the time some rod magazine ran a story on it in the 70's I think. I remember the story but don't remember what magazine or exactly when.

Mostly just see them if you run inner tubes with slicks. If you run tubeless no need for them or not as much need.

For what it's worth, I've used grease when mounting tires on rims for a couple of decades now, with no problems of tires spinning on the rims so far. But I'm not racing.

I HAD to use them back in the 60's. New M&H slicks with tubes on a OT late 60's car. I was advised to mark the rim and tires and watch the valve stem. Sure enough after several burnouts and runs the paint and valve stem showed the slick was slipping on the rim that was mounted with no lube. Installed the 6 screws and never a problem with slick slippage again.
