Very nice! Great info. Thanks much for taking time to photo and post this. I'm sure our astute moderators will add this permanently to the tech section. I'll be taking a hard look at this thread again, that's for sure.
No problem! Learn by trying, right? The hard plastic line didn't work for me - couldn't get the cable through it - tried two cables, so don't know if they changed the spec. I ended up using vinyl tubing which is much more flexible (obviously too flexible and "stretchy"). I'm sure the tubing you used would've worked fine from that perspective, if I could've gotten the cable through there... I'll stop by my NAPA and see if they've got any. I also have some copper tubing that might work - I'll check that & save a trip to NAPA if I can. Thanks for the tips, guys!
UPDATE: Was wandering down the aisles at Home Depot last week looking for something else & saw these 5' straight lengths of PEX tubing - got one in 3/8" diameter since they were cheap (<$3) and I'll be damned - worked perfectly. Had to slit the ends where they go over the tube stubs so the clamp would clamp tightly and hold it in place, but no monkey motion in the tubes now & full sweep of the wipers. Would like to find some wiper arms about 1" longer, but otherwise, works very well.
Great tech Ernie, I used this set up on my 32 Ford 5 window in the late 60`s & it worked great. I do like the idea of using the plastic pipe. Ill try that on my 35 Truck. Pics are great.......Cheer`s Bri
Hey there guys, I'm just fitting in a wiper unit into '29 A Coupe, was going to use the BMC unit but while surfin the interweb I came across a place called Newport Engineering that has bolt in units, so you don't have to shag around modifying the BMC units. Kiwi Helrod
Newport offer a good product (not crazy about their prices). However, they don't offer a lot of models. So you only have a couple options - this is but one.
Not in this application. I was able to fit it up under the dash w/o removing anything other than the kick panel.
I also put those Mini wipers on my car (avatar). Allready for 15 years they get rid of the European rain with no problem. You can even put different gears in for more or less degrees in wiping.
This is great! It would solve a space issue behind my dash but I have a couple of concerns. Will the push-pull cable wear out the plastic tubes, especially where it bends? What kind of lubrication do you use and will it soften the plastic tubes over time?
Citroen 2CV wiper systems are a neat and easy fit in any 30's car - just drill 2 holes for the wiper bosses and bolt em up. The sweep pattern and parking is just right too. Trouble is that they're getting hard to find here in the UK outside 2CV specialists - so a bitch and a half in the US I guess.
I found an article about those miniwipers in an old English Rod Magazine, the december '90 issue of Street Machine Also the partnumbers for different gearratio's are in there http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm235/meanlean_photos/Miniwipers1.jpg http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm235/meanlean_photos/Miniwipers2.jpg http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm235/meanlean_photos/Miniwipers3.jpg I had to convert from MIX to Bitmap so I hope it is readable
I know this was a long time ago but just wondering how the PEX tube worked out. Did the grease affect it and what about wear? I am about to install in my 32 the specialty wipers but the ally tube is a no go. Thanks.
I know this is an old thread but needs a bump. Shame all @Flat Ernie pictures are gone. We have 3 old cable wiper motors and they all have a failed park mechanism. Obviously a weak spot.
I can't see any photos to dig up a comparison. but most of those vacuum to electric conversion kits [with a reciprocating motor] use a Marine Wiper Motor. [eg: Newport] You can get them LH or RH , and with different shaft lengths. [see photo] These motors can have the sweep adjusted [up to 120 deg] and also be adjusted to park L or R And are 2 speed. If you want intermittent , there is a 3 position switch available to do this [but usually $80-00 +] Available on Eay from about $35-00 up. If you want a Wide sweep ,direct motor [wiper blade direct to the motor] start looking at rear wiper motors from SW's. My husband used a rear wiper of an English Ford Sierra SW on his race car [he tinkered with it so it would park in the central vertical position for racing] Boat wiper motors
I think I used a rear wiper on our 54 ,but of course that had steel arms under the dash. We are putting wipers in a model A small header panel. @Mimilan I dont think I fully understand (normal for me) are you saying I can convert a marine wiper to cable drive , to make a marine motor drive off the eccentric arm like these?
Marine wiper motors have a splined shaft that is reciprocating back and forth. An external lever for a cable could easily be fabricated. But seeing that you are in NZ, I wouldn't bother because NZ was the dumping ground for all those awful Pom cars built in the 60s and 70's The Morris 1100 [a car you had to give to your niece because nobody would buy it] had a cable system. And the world famous Austin Princess has a "Lucas 75664" 110 deg sweep with 2 speed motor [the same as a Mk VII Jag etc] You offer somebody $50 for the wiper system or $20 for the whole car
The infamous “Land crab” or am I wrong (again) wasn’t the Princess an upmarket Austin Maxi “Land Crab” . We were given some pommy cable wipers ,but as per awful Pommy stuff none have a function park mechanism . I went to my friendly sparky to make sure I had the wiring right, and he confirmed they were all the same. And not worth repairing . Going on a rod run on Sunday and ending up at the vintage car club ,so might have a look in their parts building. My parents surprised me with my first car when I was 15 , a Wolseley 1300 , like a Morris/Austin front wheel drive pom mobile only with fake wood dash. They couldn’t figure out why always want their 245 hemi valiant to drive.
The Austin 1800 is the landcrab. If you chase down a MK2 Austin Mini [1968 or newer] they self park and are cable drive. Most of the self park faults are in the actual wiper switch. When it is switched off, the park wire should be live [so the wiper can switch off internally] When the wiper switches on, the park switches off. https://www.angclassiccarparts.co.u...l/windscreen-wiper-motor-rack-lucastvs-marina
Kiwi 4d check TradeMe, I purchased a new wiper motor from a vender in Tauranga who brings in new parts for a range of british cars. Price was around $70. The plastic tube is used in pneumatics so an engineers supplies. I used a dipstick tube for a V8 Cat diesel. I used a 2 speed wiper motor with park, driving 3 mini wiper arms (big chop) I am doing another at present with the same format ('29 Chev 4 door converted to a pickup, chopped and channeled)
