So I found these sweet mounts at a swap years ago, I can put a taper on them so a Ford tie rod snugs nicely, however I’m wondering if the material is too thin.

Is 1/4” steel fine for this application or should I weld a ring on the back and run the taper through the whole enchilada?

Not sure if I’m overthinking this. I’m prone to overbuilding stuff.

Humm looks thicker than 1/4” . Whatever it is I would purchase some tapered bungs to weld on the back to give adequate mounting points.

  3. What he said - 6mm plate is plenty strong but not enough meat for the taper

My little bro had a pair like that on a car (they did have a thickener bung). On a big bump one of them got bent when the wishbone/axle pushed backward. He replaced them with thicker material, and I believe he gusseted them as well.

Last night before I fell asleep I was thinking about it and decided the tie rod hole definitely needed more substance.

Thanks guys for confirming my thoughts. ;)

Yeh, I too think it's a bit on the slim side, besides looking like something that "was just lay'n around", for sure needs a tapered bung added but even with that It could stand some form of reinforcing rib on the backside.
Honestly though, I'd throw that in the swap meet pile and order up a 5/16" or 3/8" plate and tapered bung set from one of the many suppliers and not take a chance.
