Need some help on a front end alignment on a 1954 Chevy, do I just need to use some shims or is it more then that ? Any info would be great Thanks Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
54 Chev car with stock suspension doesn't use shims. In all the years I aligned front ends I never had one on a front end rack that I can remember. This is what I found and it goes along with what I thought . The pivot pins are eccentric and turing the pin with the allen wrench turns what amounts to a cam lobe. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1949_53/03front/3_17.HTM Usually you want about 1/4 more positive on the drivers side than the passenger side to compensate for the crown of the road and help it drive straight. It calles for 1/2 degree + caster. Some wag will tell you that you have to have a lot more but I doubt you could adjust more than one degree + into it.
Yours is a king pin front suspension, with uneven length control arms. Alignment adjustment is performed by turning an eccentric at the top of the spindle, will correct camber if near standard curb height (not severely raised or lowered) within a range of nearly 2 degrees. There are no shims. Pay no attention to wags.
Mr 48 chevy site leaves out loosen clamp bolt and remove rear grease fitting to gain access for allen wrench.
