He started on my 1954 Bel Air (original engine and Powerglide transmission) is toast. See pic. The previous owner already converted it to 12volt. All I can find are solenoids, brushes, etc. I got a starter for a ‘56 but the gear on the end was too large. Some forums have said I could use it, but it’s going to grind like crazy. What’s the best way to get a complete 12v starter for this car? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I'd just use the original style 6 volt starter and a 12 volt solenoid. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/12-volt-starter-for-1954-chevy-235.992011/
Hamilton's in Wilder Ky will rebuild it as well as generators and water pumps. Their prices are not bad either.
