Hello,
Nice photos of the Northwest area Ferries. Those old ferries were fun to drive on to get across the water. When we were on some of the more modern ones in the Puget Sound, we found out that because of the heavy traffic ferry usage, the cars are put on, everywhere. We happened to be one of the last cars allowed in one of the ferries. They put us on an angular, up rack for one car on the inside of the ferry. All of the level places were taken and there were two spots left. We were given the right side spot, all the way to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, from Anacortes, WA.

Like all folks, we locked up our (wife's new car) and went upstairs for a great view of the whole area while heading toward the islands. All of a sudden, an announcement comes on the loudspeaker and says there is a silver car on a outside rack with the alarm horn going on and on, to the dismay of the ferry workers. So, we rushed down to see if it was our car. It was and was honking loudly in that tall cavern of cars. It was loud enough to be heard all over that floor level.

We shut off the alarm, locked it up again and went back upstairs. Within 10 minutes, another announcement came on with the same tone, an alarm is going off on a rack near the back of the ferry. So, once again, we went down there to take care of business. We reset the alarm and took 10 steps to the stairs and the alarm immediately started to sound again. This time we were right there.

What was happening was that because of the car being on an angular, up ramp, the vibration of the big motors, propellers and wave action caused the sensor to go off and sound the car alarm. We rolled down the windows, turned off the alarm. My wife walked up to the viewing area and I took a nap in the unlocked car. The hum of the motor put me to sleep instantly.

So, be aware of those sneaky angular, up racks on the sides of the modern ferries for all kinds of cars and trucks. The vibration will set off the alarms.
