Bud Roche, John Kranenburg and Don Mattison ran this car out of Evergreen Park, IL. I see a lot of influence from the Greek and that's not surprising, these guys and Karamesines were all tight BITD.

When I was doing this stuff in old days….. I remember thinking maybe I wasn’t doing the smartest thing every time I saw an ambulance waiting near end of track for fools like me… :D

    Hello,

From 1959 our history at Lions Dragstrip was enhanced with something we had never seen in our drag racing adventures. We had read about the aircraft motor race car from Ohio in the local Drag News and thought it to be an odd ball race car. We were so used to the hot race cars from the Westcoast that other locations took a back seat. We just had to know who our own competition was going to be in our respective classes.

In 1959, Art Afrons actually brought his aircraft engine race car to Lions for a couple of exhibitions. It was really something to see the race car go down the track. But, the one thing that was obvious, it was a slow starter and just past the tower, about 1/3 of the way down, it started to pick up speed.

There were rumors that a small block Chevy powered FED raced the big Afrons Green Monster in a match race. Since the big Green Monster takes a while to get going, he actually lost to the little SBC FED of the Tapia Bros.

My brother and I were somehow not there to film the match race event, but the photos are pretty good from the local photographers. This has been documented in photos like the one below:

“David and Goliath Revisited” called for big headlines.

In 1959 in a highly publicized match race, Bobby Tapia in the Tapia Bros SBC race car called “Almost Grown” beat Art Afrons in the big Green Monster #11.

The event was labeled “Bobby the Giant Killer.”

Pat Akins vs Don Garlits, don't know who was driving Pat's car, maybe Joe LaCosta?

    Above two pictures:
Pure Hell was in the same shop with my coupe in Sebastopol, Ca.
I got to sit in it, thinking "Yep, I wouldn't drive it,"
