So, I have been sort of on pause for a while. Because of my own lack of patience I busted the carrier in the 8.8 I was going to swap into the 55. You can read about that here.

    https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/lucky-legrange-strikes-again-8-8-help-please.1130352/

I learned a lot. I had a friend that sets these things up come over and sort of school me on differentials. I doubt I will go into business doing them, but it helped get a handle on exactly how they are adjusted etc. I have it all back together, for the most part. I'll install axle seals and axles tomorrow night, if my social director doesn't have my night planned out. Hopefully by Saturday night I will have the rear back in the car with new lowered leaf springs and shackles. I'm excited to see how it sits.

Greetings Roothawg!..excellent work as always...one question, how do you know the axle is properly aligned when you reattached the tube after shortening it?

I used a piece of angle iron that was big enough to allow the two halves to center up.

I tried to cut it up close to the pumpkin to reduce warpage, hoping the center section would act as a heat sink. I used an inclinometer to make sure that the angles were the same. I tacked it in 90 degree increments and then filled in the gaps gradually. It's close enough for the girls I go with. We will know for sure this weekend.

Thanks Danny. It will be a better looking car. I just have to wait for the dang Govt to open back up! My wife and I are both Federales. No paycheck Tuesday.

I assembled the rest of the stuff this morning. Brakes, axle seals, brake lines etc. I’ll have to do a little fab work once it is installed.

I can’t get motivated in this weather. I can maybe pull off 4 hours and I lose interest and wander back into the house....

It still needs the spring pads welded up and a few brackets to hold the rubber brake lines. The original brackets mounted to the spring pads which are long gone.

If you are a purist, avert your eyes!!!! Evil disc brakes ahead! D80893C3-9F6F-4FDA-8F33-4C21A098BD4B.jpeg 79369A3B-094C-4545-AA91-25649149FBAF.jpeg
I think this should make a great daily driver. For all practical purposes, it will be a 2000 Ford Explorer with a lumpy cam.

Sometimes you just have to make yourself do it. I’m starting a new build as soon as the snow melts and I make more room in my unheated barn, youngster...

I know. I have about 3 projects going already. Just making it a point to go out and finish a few things a night helps.

Get those rear springs in yet? Want to see how it sits. I need to lower my 56 and would like to do it without 3 inches of blocks.

You think these are stock? They look longer...

  29. I don't think so myself. First glance I thought 51 Merc skirts. Here is a photo of stock 55/56 skirts. They appear to be a lot shorter top to bottom. No matter what they look good on there. Also I think the stock ones just fit inside the wheel opening, not an overlap onto the body.
