upload_2019-3-11_5-26-59.png Updraft aircraft carbs on supercharged
    Hemi motor, circa 1962-65.

    Hey M,

In hot rodding/drag racing, we have all seen many different combinations of induction on the race cars. When I was doing my research for facts on the Gary Gabelich Tribute, I came across many different looks and ideas for his short, but extensive history. They came together to make a nice contribution to the Historical Society of Long Beach’s “Legend of Lions” day.

One of the photos uncovered was the time at Lions Dragstrip driving a blown Hemi motor with some familiar, but rarely used updraft carburetors. (similar to the motor in the Vulcan’s 32 purple Vicky)

photo from the Rae Gabelich Collection

Gary Gabelich was game to drive just about anything with a steering wheel and powerful motor. This was one of his early forays into the Top Eliminator FEDs with an extremely short wheel base. We were out of drag racing at this time period, so I do not have any action films of this unusual FED. Thanks for the rare photo, Rae.

Similar updraft carbs on the Vulcan's Car Club 32 Vicky Altered sedan.

Everyone seems to be more familiar with aircraft carbs on the Vulcan’s Car Club 1932 Vicky Altered. There were others using them, too. But, it was just not a common thing seen at the drags.

Saw this little number at the recent Lodi Swap Meet last Sunday..... At first glance it almost doesn't look like a car part. I'd like to see (hear?) one running.

  14. The updraft carbs were one of Joe Reath's ideas. It's been my understanding that the carbs were originally used on tanks.

We may have seen this version at Lions in 1958, but the photos/movies never showed the hood off to showcase the motor.
    from Dave 286ardun:

"Koenig and Sundin sedan, usually ran an injected Chrysler, this shows a blown Olds with the sidedraft carb setup that Joe Reath used on the Raker's Car Club Chrysler...Koenig and Sundin and the Rakers both had Reath sponsorship so this may a merging of two projects, one the car and one the engine. It looks like the blower is driven by a single chain."

    Hey Dean,
Thanks for the reminder. I knew that there was a photo somewhere on the HAMB to show the updraft carbs on the Koenig Sundin Reath Automotive Model A sedan. Joe Reath always had something different rolling around in his head and he never held back in any discussion, whether you wanted to listen or not. All of the time, it was, "had to listen" and it was good knowledge.

We young teens were his captive audience when we went to Reath Automotive on 10th and Cherry for some race car parts or get some work done on our motor. My brother was always impressed with the knowledge from Joe Reath. But, while listening, we always craned our necks, since Joe was so tall!

Those were the days of driving across Long Beach to the 10th and Cherry Ave. location, from 1957 to 1960.

The updrafts had an unmistakably deep hollow sound, louder than the exhaust from the front.
Another sensory distinction in the non-cookie cutter days...very cool.
