...or, finding the right color green. I’m getting ready for color on my ‘59 T’bird, inspired by the Hirohata Merc, and want a light mint pearl, rather than the original, or the clone’s, mint color. IMG_0731.JPG
Any help getting some info about the colors on the Oz built Caddy? That’s what I’m imagining for my car.
A pretty high bar, I know...

FA412375-9A9F-4A2C-93C5-75F95C2EF2DA.jpeg I anguished over color selection for probably 2 years. Two shades I really liked, Porsche Radom green and a 57 Caddy Biarritz color were not available through local paint jobbers. I settled for 63 Chevrolet Laurel Green after scouring through the paintref.com color library. No regrets...

That’s a great color. The other concern I have is, “Do I have the chops to pull the pearl off?” I’m a hobbiest painter, a pretty good one, but a poorly done job in a difficult color, as opposed to a good job in a light metallic, which I can handle, is NOT where I want to end up...

Sounds like you're talking yourself out of the pearl. Maybe you just need a little moral support from someone who has painted pearl, anyone?!

hope that the new color does not cost you a "mint" - Ha! - have you checked House of Kolor, TCP Global Paint, etc for possible colors?

Everything I see is too “green”. I picture a very, very pale mint, and I’m not sure, never having done a pearl, how to get there. A white pearl tinted with a candy green dye?

sounds like you to need to ask around and find a local true custom car painter that can help you figure what it will take to get the color/look that you are after - even if you find a Cool color on one car does not mean that it will look right on another car -

  14. Pearl is not in the colour. They are considered a tri coat. Base, pearl mid coat, clear. You paint your base colour and then choose a pearl colour to complement/enhance it, add the pearl to clear and spray it over top of the base colour. Then clear coat. The tough part is you really can't make mistakes with the pearl coat as it can't be sanded and fixed much like a single stage metallic.

it's just another coat Brian, nothing to worry about spraying. The prep work needs to be spot on, as the pearl will enhance any defects.
Solid base, pearl mid coat, then a clear. Easy

If you can handle metallics you can do pearl. It is basically a clear coat that has to be sprayed evenly like a metallic. You can also use a small pattern to highlight areas like peaks, ect.

  17. Brian, the Oz-built Caddy's paint reminded me of this pickup.
According to the RJ article, its color is HOK "shimmerin' urethane pearlescent metallic light green".
If you're interested, I can take some cell-phone pics of the rest of the article.

Lotta you guys know more about paint than me.
But...I thought I read years ago that you can put the pearl in the clear...or the paint...and it gives a different effect.
    Yes? No?

I have done it both ways. One was a black with gold and/or silver pearl and a red on top for a tri-coat. The other one was white with blue pearl in the clear coat. Both works. For me, too many coats of clear with pearl makes it cloudy. Just want enough for it to show at an angle but looks white, or whatever the base color is straight on.

Anyone friends with John D'Agostino? Or however you spell his last name. He was the owner of the 40 Cadillac called Sophia above when it was built in 2013. He called it Sophia after the actress Sophia Loren.

House of color ice mint pearl was what was on the BJ auction listing when it was sold in 2016

Thanks guys! I admit to not knowing what I don’t know. . A light sea foam, with a blue or green pearl? I should use a base color lighter than I want the end result?

  28. I tagged Chopolds and Thehighlander but they haven't chimed in yet. I would PM Mark (chopolds). Super knowledgeable and super helpful. When I was trying to figure out the colour for my truck he was spraying test panels to help with my search without even being asked.
