72 is the year I'm looking for. Well 70s, ideal would be a versallies. Im needing to see what vehicle it was. An f series truck wont work.

    probably a 1972 truck rear.

If you tell us more about the rest of the rear end, or a picture of it, we could probably confirm what it's out of. Like what it has for spring perches, wheel bolt pattern, etc.

  8. A Versailles rear would have disc brake rotors and four link factory suspension with coil spring mounts. F150 truck will have drum brakes with leaf spring mounting pads.

I have a listing of 22 Ford 9 inch rears and their dimensions varying from a low of 57.25 in 57-59 Ford to 69.25 which is 77-80 ford E150 van. Accuracy is very important; you can tell a lot just by the bolt pattern. Ford used 5 on 4.5,5 on 5,and 5 on 5.5. Remember bolt pattern is outside to center, not center to center. Trucks also used the spring pad on top of the axle, cars mounted on the bottom of the axle. Flatheads Forever!

That is what a 72 truck rear looks like.

  18. You can still use the housing, get it narrowed and change the center section.

I thought about doing that. Just seemed easier to find the right size 9. I need one to be the width of a Versallies which is about 58" correct, also with disc brakes. The disc brakes I can always get a conversion kit. But if all else fails ill get this one shortened and change the ratio. Its going in a 64 impala convertible with an LS1 with a 4L60E.

  20. With a [sputter, cough] WHAT???? You could have gone all day without saying that. Sure it doesn't have a 327/powerglide?
Anyway, if you plan to replace axles to match your front bolt pattern [5 on 4.75"] it doesn't matter what bolt pattern the Ford axle is now. And if you plan to alter the length of the housing for your width and add your bracketry to mount the thing in your car, it doesn't really matter what housing you use. Pretty soon you've got lotsa money wrapped up in the rear end. I've done the very same thing building a 9 inch before. I ended up with 1400 bucks in the axle before I even got to the brakes!
I found out I'd been time and money ahead [really!] if I'd just bought one of those complete rear axle assemblies from the vendors who sell them...especially if you plan to keep your coil spring suspension. You can buy a complete bolt-in unit with any ratio you want and it'll have the brakes you want and the correct bolt pattern for your wheels for less $$$ than buying all the parts separately....jus sayin.

Haha. No the original was a 327 with the powerglide but im putting in a LS and 6l60e. I guess youre on I can shorten it and youre also right on just buying one already set up. They sell these 9s set up for Impalas but they end up running up there in price but beats running around shortening this and doing that. Besides after chrome I'm gonna be in it deep anyway.

Not need but being that it will have a rack and pinion, a modern engine and tranny why not go broke and get disc brakes all the way around. I already have the kit for the front brakes.

Versailles disc brake parts are out-of-production, and sucked, even when new.

And people wonder why threads get deleted, and they get banned.

Sir, if I broke some kind of rule please report my thread and get it deleted. I was unaware I was breaking a rule. Have a good day.
