Very neat old custom! The condition doesn’t look too bad either.

I am not a big customs guy but that one is done very tastefully in my mind. Hope someone here gets it and does a thread on cleaning it up. that paint looks like it would need to be buffed is all.

  7. Does anyone have that copy of Dec. 1962 Car Craft? Does anyone know Brian Ellis? Is he still around? How about the builder: Art Root?

Neat car, I like the quads. Looks like the '56 Chrysler grille was swapped out for a '61 unit at some point. Both grilles look a little bit forced. Still neat though.

Sadly, another owner/seller who couldn't be troubled to roll it outside, wash it, and take some decent pictures of it. I hope it finds a new owner.

She was a proud car at one time, be cool to see it put back to its original show condition.

If cash wasn't a problem I'd buy it myself.

  14. I see cars like this from time to time and wonder what happened to the car, did the owner pass away, did he just get tired of the car, what happened for it to fall in such disrepair? HRP

Interesting car but I don't think it's worth 10 grand. I don't think it looks as good as a stock Studebaker either.

    ^^^^^^^^ X2

It isn't that '53/'55 Stude Coupes/Hardtops can't be improved upon....but especially where those cars are concerned, it takes two things often absent in "Customizers"......good taste and restraint. The featured car here isn't the worst version I have seen, but it hardly could be considered and improvement, IMO (and Rusty's), of course.

Probably the most egregious example of Stude butchery was a red Coupe for sale in Florida a year or two ago......don't think I kept a photo of it because I really wanted to 'unsee' it.......o_O

Like the version with the chrome reverse and the original color. Yep, with better pics and a little cleaning it would probably already be gone.

  19. I think it looks neat..... paging @moriarty !!

Funny how a car that had so much effort put into it, shown off , won multiple awards .

And then just..... and then?:( Get forgotten about like so many old socks.

Well I guess if it can happen to the golden Sahara what does a car like this stand a chance?

I guess my question is why? I’ve owned a bunch of stuff over the years and apart from maybe 1 or 2 that I would of liked to keep, I had my fun cut it loose and buy something else to have fun with. Why have it sit and watch it fall apart?

Watching a project sit is one thing, but I’m sure this thing got put away once, a nice gleaming example of a custom from that era to get forgotten about and dull and a gentle whiff of mouse pee’d interior.

It’s a bit sad:( hopefully someone grabs it and does it up nice !

It's the natural progression of most tangible goods. Popular, maybe even revered, when new....ages, new styles come along, item gets passed along. For various reasons, next owners and the public in general do not value it the same as when new.....the more often it changes hands and more years pass, the value declines further. Much of these goods are lost forever. The surviving items may be rediscovered and reclaimed. Evidence is all around us.

To me it looks like it's always been stored inside and is very complete/untouched and in great survivor condition, other than needing a very thorough detailing and catch up on 40 years worth of maintenance. It's not like it sat outside under a tree or anything.

Also, other than the grille, I think it's quite good looking, there's nothing else on the car I dislike. Plus, since the grille has already been changed out from it's magazine days, I see no harm in doing something different with the grille.

I love the quad lights, the interior, the tail lights, even the apparent original color.

I am pretty sure that I saw that car either in the Studebaker exibit at the 62 Worlds fair or at the rod and custom show that they put on during the worlds fair.
To a 15 year old car freak in 1962 it looked pretty good.
I lived on Bainbridge Island then and we watched or kept track of the space needle being built from our 9th grade English class room window.

Appears the engine was swapped out for a small block Ford along the way. The ebay ad info indicates car had lightly modified Stude engine when originally being shown.....

Dick Steinkamp owned this awhile back, and then sold it. Follow the thread over on the forum of the Studebaker Drivers Club....
