I inherited this 1940 Cadillac convertible, and I was wondering if anyone has a genuine idea of the value of it. I’ll never have the funds to get around to restoring it unfortunately....
From what I’ve found, it’s number 36 out of 75 produced of this type, it has the original paint. I included a picture of the body tag.

    .... remains of original
Paint ..... top irons there somewhere? What convertible specific parts are missing? What else is missing? Could be beautiful once restored.

Its only missing the headlights and top irons. I heard there’s someone with patterns for them in the Cadillac club though.

I looked it up and was surprised to find Cadillac did make a 4 door convertible that year, Model 62, Convertible sedan with Fisher body on a 129" wheelbase. It was the most expensive 62 at $2195. The Model 62 was Cadillac's lowest priced line, if you can talk of a low priced Cadillac. It was also the most popular with 5903 sold, of all body styles.

For more information, value etc suggest you ask the guys at the AACA AACA Forums

If I didn't have funds to restore it I would sell it to someone who does. I wouldn't expect to get all that much for it though.
Maybe contact the Cadillac forum suggested, best offer.

I'll second that! Who knows it may be worth more than we think, I know the 1941's are high ticket, but maybe they are totally different mechanically. Bob

are you trying to find out how much to ask for it? or are you planning your estate? do you need to get insurance on it? or are you looking for offers? or what?

It would be worth 20k to 60 k restored, depending on how well it was done.

It would also be fun to get it running and drive it around unrestored. Too bad they like to overheat!

Might be rare, doesn't mean it's worth money...but could be..

I'm thinking blast it, matte black spray...drop the ass end down and cruise it (in no rain). Don't forget the mohair and big fuzzy dice!

Unless you have incredible skills and a 55 gallon drum of $100 bills, I would sell the car. I would research sites that cater to antique cars, magazines such as Hemmings etc.

  12. you will probably end up at less than 10K for sure on it. The fact is, if you don't have the top irons or the door pillar centers or any parts that make it it the convertible, then you have a parts car.
A '41 Cadillac Convertible was listed a while on ebay and CL it seems to be right around 7500.00 with a parts car.

If you have nothing it don't expect anything, then you might be surprised. To restore is well over what the value would be in the end.

Also ebay will tell you what its worth.
As someone else mentioned ask the Cadillac and LaSalle club, there may be someone there that will tell you or just take a look at their or old classifieds.

I'm gonna go the other way on this. I'd find just how rare it actually is, and if it's not rare as a bunch of them were made just not many around, I'd build a nice "gangster style" cruiser out of it. Big 429 or 475 Caddy power, Carson top, big wide whites on real wire wheels.
But then again, if it's 1 of 30 or 1 of 75, I'd try to see if anybody wanted it to restore or for parts.

Rare, but still a miniscule market. Plus the cost to make this a diamond already mentioned. I'd take the first reasonable (or unreasonable) offer & move on.

It will cost buckets of money to restore but as a stocker if its well done would be 100gs plus. Problem is it won't be a money maker unless you are retired and can do most of the work yourself.

Chopped Carson top, lowered, slight dechrome, skirts, and dark maroon paint. Worth a lot more for a lot less investment.

You inherited it but don't have the $$$ to restore it.
How much sympathetic value does the car have to you? Would it kill you to see it go down the road?
Is it feasible that you could get it to turn over/run? That would make it worth more in a sale.
FWIW, if you can do the mechanical work, The car and body look solid. Work on getting some top irons.
The mild Custom idea is my favorite, especially if the value of the car as it stands ends up to not be very high.

Present this car on the appropriate sites exactly as you have done here. You won't know what others think until you do. You know what you can't do financially, but that doesn't mean that there isn't some Cad fanatic out there that would Love to have it! This could be a great addition to someone's vintage limo fleet, you just never know.

You haven't mentioed the engine. 1940 was the last year of the V16. If you have a V16 you have some serious value.

I would collect the headlights, door handles and look for a nce running engine ( 472 cad.auto) and get it running and drive it as is as money allows. If you are not into it - then as others have said, find someone who would be into it. But don't be in a hurry though and by all means keep the car protected from the elements!

if it was a gutted 32-34 3w body shell pushed over a bank into a swamp, the people here wouldn't be worried about how much money or work it needs.

The condition of the body looks to be very good, and a person could run it without a top and just use a fake top boot. That's a beautiful front view coming down the road. Way better than a 41 Cad IMO

I love the custom ideas but I think I’ll go to the Cadillac guys and Hemmings and have a go there. My dad and I have other projects that mean a lot more to us than to start another.

List it for sale at 10k, drop the price by $1000, every week or month, depending on how soon you want to sell it. When it sells, let us know what it was worth.

I’d start high (as you see fit) and shoot low when a nibble arrived.
