700r4 is a Chevy bolt pattern transmission but I'm pretty sure there's an adaptor available. I think I'd just go with a well built Th400 and a 2: something diff gear. the 430's a torque monster and you'll never miss a low gear if you're not racing.
The 700R4/4L60 is basically a TH350 with overdrive. Same dimensions and everything, too. The 200-4R is a TH200 with overdrive. There was only one good 200-4R and it's not common. Of course, the 700R4 was never available with a BOP pattern. Every non-Chevy engine with overdrive used the 200-4R. People use adapter plates to mate 700R4s to BOPs, which tells you how useful the 200-4R is to the aftermarket (unless you have a Grand National). The TH400 is the bad mammajamma. The 4L80 is a TH400 with overdrive.
buicks are great engines just keep the revs below 5k with a stock cam shift at 4500 use a 3.55 gear and it will be great! The bop is just the top two holes a 12ga plate with the correct holes drilled along with spacers for the converter is all you need.
Thanks Guys for the info, Back in the 70's I put a 430 in a 55 Nomad, everyone thought I was crazy until they raced me. The Nomad would run 13.70 all day long and still get 21 MPG on the hiway. I am working on a 56 GMC and it has a 430 in it already with a 400 trans. I think of the 430 Buick as a poor mans L88. Rich
How goes it? Tx68riv. I have a ? My 430 Is getting a small amount of oil in the radiator. I replaced the intake gasket. It has the edelbrock performer. It does not have water in oil. Runs great. Runs a tad warm if idling but snaps out as soon as it gets some RPM. Anyways I been driving it like this for awhile. Would like your input.
Weak spot is the front cover with the oil pump built in, aluminum and it scores easily, somebody makes a better pump setup but do not know that would be. The oil pump screens in late ;70's and early eighties has VERY FINE screens on them and when cheap filters sluffed off paper element they plugged easily, have torn down at least 4 with screen blocked.
