    Hello,

For the fans of old vintage history of Drag Cars In Motion, here is a video that popped up in my own films that I had just zipped by many times, without much thought. It was very short and the cars that zipped by were not ID’ed for all of those years since 1960. Recently, I showed the short clip to some old drag racing people and they identified it as the blue Scuderia FED race car. at Lions? in Long Beach?

For years, I had known where I was standing to film the race cars in 1960. It was in a rare spot on the Dragstrip near my old friend, the white ambulance driver, just below the orange, Lions Timing Tower. For me, it was a no hassle, no interference place that did not have other fan’s big heads or hairdos getting in the way of a cool movie clip. The drawback: the angle of the race became blurry very fast as the distance closed with the race progressing.

It was a place to call my own, including conversations with the ambulance driver. But, the security force roaming the dragstrip did not like it that I was so close to the unfenced area of the lanes. What was that teenager with a movie camera doing out there? Well, I wanted a close up of my brother racing his 1958 black Impala in the tower side lane.

The blue Scuderia FED was one of those cool looking race cars from back in those early days. They were experimenting with different designs of what would go faster than the others of the day. Wasn’t that the whole point of building hot rods and drag race cars? The earliest version had a top mounted 671 blower on a Hemi. Then a few years later at the Winternationals, they showed up with a 671 inside of the nose cone for more streamlining.

So, the question comes up, which version was the most consistent and the fastest?

If it had been fast, within two months everybody would have had them.

  22. It's Bill Coburn's Messerschmidt comp coupe. When he and Neil Leffler abandoned the "Iron Mistress", Bill pulled a mold from the body, and made some in fiberglass.

Jazzy Nelson leaves the Bakersfield starting line, two fuel flatheads, two drive trains, but too heavy to be really competitive...give him credit for innovation though. Notice the early starting signal.
