    Thanks.
I wonder what the story was on the flaming burnout. Was that one of those show things or parts failure? It almost looks like there is a liquid spraying out next to the belly pan.

    Rude,
    Interesting on first pic:

Looks like LARGE disc brakes rotors with wire wheels. Too early for guard beam blockers. Beside they are not full diameter and looks like drilled full of holes.
Anybody have any ideas on what this was about?

I’d guess that it was run as a land speed car previously, and those were backing plates for a different set of wheels they used to run?Similar to home made moon disc style wheel covers?
That might be completely wrong, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

City fathers in OKC really screwed up when they decided not to host the Nationals anymore.

Was the track in Detroit on city grounds also?

    Gotcha
Was just curious since the OKC track was at the fairgrounds. Most likely would needed a new track and location to have kept it there, but it sure would have been nice. Same with the World Finals in Tulsa, a squabble there with thee track owner got it moved to Dallas. Still have to believe those two things have kept NHRA from having a national event back in Oklahoma.

Not sure that was the real problem as the grandstands you see in the back ground were for the dirt track.

Some of you were mentioning old drag strips and event's from the past and when I was going through some of my old Hot Rod magazine's I grabbed some shots of old drag strips that were mentioned in some of the articles...hope it's ok to post them here , probably considered OT , but I didn't know where else to post them and some of you were talking about old track's....sorry but it's hard to just let this old history fade away....also sorry for the poor quality pics ...some where already crap in the magazine..... Speaking of old drag strips...has anyone ever heard of Pennsylvania's Langhorne Speedway and the Dragon's Straight Eighth drag strip , at the time said to be the world's safest drag strip, that run's across the infield of the Speedway ? .....it even had over head signal light's used for starting light's..... I just found a article on the history of the track and how it got started in a 1959 drag magazine I was flipping through...it's a very interesting read...if any one wants to read it let me know and I will pm it too you , four pages, I didn't post it didn't want to cause a ripple in this normally smooth running thread.... I think Langhorne was a perfect circle that originally was dirt then paved. One mile in length, never knew about the drag strip. Great book about that track written by L. Spencer Riggs. Coastal 181 books still has it I believe.

Sorry for the delay in replying but I was at the US Nationals all weekend. It was a show deal--pour gas around the rear tires and light it off. I have also posted a photo that I shot at that event showing the scorched body from when the car sat in the flames a little too long and here it is once more. You can see the blackened decals above the rear tire.

    roo,
I remember seeing Funny Cars doing those fiery burnouts.

Were there any neat altereds at Indy? They are getting few and far between. Except for a few traditional holdouts like Huettman and Ambrose and Rampy most alterds today look like Pro Stocks.

I realize that these shots may not fit with in the date boundaries ...for that I apologize...but I just spotted them while flipping through a magazine and I got to say that there's something about a Altered doing a fire burnout that just puts the starch in my jeans....
