I'm taking apart a 39ish Ford banjo rear. I've pushed the pinion and its bearings out the drive shaft side, but the bearing at the tip of the pinion is still inside the banjo case. Does this push out to the inside of the case, or to the outside? I cant tell by looking at it.

Pushes into the housing, check out www.vanpeltsales.com, they have a lot of early Ford information and drawings showing how the bearings are installed. They have a section called Parts Drawings that are an excellent reference.

Remove rivets from retainer and push it into case. Good rivets not available as far as I know. I use a small aircraft bolt and lock nut to re install retainer.

No good reason to do that. Just push it out the front like you would the pinion.

It can be done that way, Not sure why I remove plate, could be loose or I just like taking things apart.
