Thinking of this thread, I snapped a picture of the kid's car, when I was over there yesterday. Hot rod headlights, on hot rod headlight stands, on a hot rod.
I think when they are too big, or too low that they just look odd. I messed for days trying to get mine mounted where I thought they looked right. My RPU is going back together now.
On the non-fendered cars I have built I try to align the top of the headlight to the top of the front tire, placing the face of the light no more than 1" in front of the radiator...
Obviously, you guys are looking at it all wrong with misleading pictures. < ------ It's not the location, shape, size or even wattage of the headlights as much as WHAT they're attached to.
Although I like the look of lower big headlights, they aren’t traditional in a sense of what was used from 1940 on. When sealed beams arrived and where mandatory by government high sealed beams where the rage. Look better? Not in my opinion. Although I do appreciate little perky ones.
Basically, no lights at all looks best, but that isn't practical. So in the alternative they should be sized & placed so they don't draw your eye or interfere with the lines of the car. But they should be attractive so when you do look at them they don't repulse you; chrome is nice, like a nice shiny ring on a slender feminine finger, or a dainty silver chain on a beautiful women's neck. The point is to accent the femininity and beauty of the woman, not take away from it. When you look at a car and the first thing you notice are the headlights, they got it wrong.
I might move the lights more apart slightly but for now this is where they look best to me. It all might change when the hood is completed. But figuring it out is part of the fun.
IMO.... big headlights on 20's -30's Hot Rod's are like big tits on a midget. Cool, but in a sad way.
I tried a few different kinds/sizes of lights and photo'd them. Some were just plain silly! I finally settled on 7" bulb-type Halogens and I hate 'em. I'm going to 7" sealed beams.
