Thanks for the tip!!! Valvoline 30w Racing Oil has been my choice since the '60s.

Anybody else feeling the abandonment I am? Just 'pissed us off', like flies on a toilet rim.
(this is the correct use of the term 'pissed off'; 'He pissed me off', 'I pissed her off', etc.)
Nevertheless, Valvoline's omitance of the 'Z' 'PISSES ME OFF'!

  7. I would agree. Although I haven't bought any in a year or so. Why take the zinc out of it?

I just ordered 12 quarts from Summit. They all had "high zinc" on the bottle.

I also think this is fake news, every bottle of Valvoline racing oil I have seen says high Zinc. Now with that said the reason Zinc or more correctly ZDDP the additive pack that contains the zinc is being removed or at least reduced greatly in modern oils is it kills catalytic converters and makes them useless. That's why they are taking the zinc out.

  13. Correct. The little bit of oil (with zinc) that makes its way into the exhaust stream begins to lay down a layer of zinc on the platinum and iridium catalyst material, reducing its effectiveness. Lead was removed from fuels for the same reason.

I suspect that this is also the reason for the switch to platinum and iridium spark plugs. Any material that erodes from the plug's electrodes and enters the exhaust stream is already the same material as the catalyst. And copper core spark plugs aren't nearly as common as they were several years ago.

Can’t se this happening, it’s a race oil not for street use? OP needs to come back and back up what he spat out with some facts .
Edit: went to the valvoline site, says zinc , someone’s bullshitting.

Contacted Valvoline engineers some years ago about the zinc issue, he assured me that the present formula meets the zinc specs.

Completely appropriate term both in this case and in some others. Hurts when it's right-don't it?

There was a time not too long ago (maybe 2 or 3 years ago) that there were 2 "types" of VR-1 oil being sold. The ON ROAD was a low ZDDP package and the OFF ROAD was a high ZDDP package. I think they quit producing the ON ROAD style a year or so ago because of the confusion. I saw both side by side at a local parts store and the difference was a small warning label that would have been easy to miss. Hopefully they saw the light and stopped making the low ZDDP VR-1 for ON ROAD use.

That is why I just use Brad Penn, Royal Purple or other specially formulated oils for flat tappet stuff.

My latest project I just went roller cam, tired of reading oil bottle labels.

If the containers say zinc they are probably old stock, the new ones do not say zinc, and if you feel the oil it’s lost the sticky feeling,

  25. I switched to Kendall racing oil 2 years ago and I always read the label, I should se how much ZDDP is in it. Never hurts to be an educated consumer.

Valvoline lists their zinc content at 1400 PPM, parts per million. Kendall GT1 goes by weight percent (wt %) which is .12.

Too early to do any math...
