Technical Small block identification help

  1. And I never implied that they had to be period correct. I was simply stating that they where not the 62 thru 67 camel hump heads. Ive got a 68 327 that has a Q jet intake and a set of heads that have a rectangle with a L cast on top of it. no accessory holes. Came out of a 3/4 ton PK likely has a set of forged dish pistons.

The only way to tell if its a real Corvette engine is if has Corvette valve covers.

Fourdoors beat me to it According to this 58 or 60 283. http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-codes/chevy-engine-codes-suffix-4.php
Not the first Chevy that had an older engine stuffed in it for sure.
A bit more searching shows where you got confused.
Block code is FOI2ID which says spec high performance 1966 327.
The code is F zero, one, two, one D and Not ID.

Curious as to the source of your information, not all of the independantly published (non GM) application/years/casting number/code lists are accurate.

  6. As old as the block is anything could have been done to it. back in the late 50s and early sixties. You could purchase a balanced stroker kit from the Don Garlits speed shop to turn a 283 into a 352.

when I asked if you found the casting date.

    Well....are you going to share?

It's obviously not a 1966 engine because it has only one suffix letter (D), and all the 1966 engines had 2 letters.

yeah, it takes some getting used to. Four digits for the assembly date, starting around 1957, when they finally decided it would be a good idea to include the leading Zero for engines build from January to September.

Good point, it appears that it is a pretty early block so it probably could go out to four inches safely.
Somehow I missed your post earlier.

I have an sbc engine in my 55 chevy that I think is very similar to the one you have. I have attached a pic of my engine number below. I would also very much like to know the casting date on the block. I haven't been able to make mine out with the engine installed.[IMG]

Yours was assembled November 11th, and they used the D code for the 283 powerglide cars from 1958-64 model years. So the casting date code on the back is the only way to find out what year it's from, unless it happens to have matching heads that you can see the date on...and you're confident they're original to the block. Which isn't real likely, these days.

Ryan, all signs point to 283. It is an Impala block, ‘58-‘64, 195hp 2-bbl H-cam engine. Assembled Jan 21, pick a year...

I'd like to ask the OP to fill out his profile COMPLETELY (and ANY member for that matter), so we know where he is. Canadian Chevrolet engines had some "odd" castings and casting marks. Even USA/Canadian border states had cars that criss-crossed the borders as they were bought and sold, bought and sold. Pull a valve cover, and give us the casting numbers on the heads. The block could be almost anything being a small journal, and the interchangeability of parts and crossbreeding (283 to 4 inch bore, 327 with 283 crank, etc, etc, etc). If you can't see the block numbers and casting dates, use the bore scope you used on the cylinders to provide them. BUT, in the end I agree, it's a "Corvette engine", they all are. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Here is some pictures, the man I bought it from said it was in a building for 20 years , and didn't know any history on it.I got in home does turn over ,but took valve covers off and it is very dirty in side.I was thinking about priming oil pump ,and trying to crank it.what do ya think.

  23. At least, I would pull it apart and clean it out and reassemble it if it looks ok. It’s anybody’s guess what might be waiting in the oil pan to block the pickup tube. I had a 223 Ford once that had about an inch of grey gumpy shit in the bottom. I am guessing it was lead from gasoline.

You are probably right, I would hate to do any damage to it.I got other 283 tore apart, going to build it this winter, seen the motor in the pictures in A local trader paper ,and couldn't pass it up.I will probably just hang on to it,and rebuild it one day.
