Ah, yes, the good old days, but be careful what you wish for.......The Great Depression, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, drug 'culture', race riots, etc. etc. etc. Every age has its good & bad features. I came of age in the late-50's & 60's and it wasn't all American Graffiti ! Enjoy the times you are in - they're short enough as they are !

  7. I rremember the old stations along the road back in the 1950,s my father made lots of trips between Indiana and Arkansas. Our block building was a country store and gas station back in the day. Used to have a lift at the west end of the building. In fact its still there. Prior to our buying this place they extended the building 25 feet and poured concrete over it. When I was a teen I would come and use the lift. They charged me 50 cents to use the lift. Gas cost in the neighborhood of 30 cents a gal. There was a manual tire machine, tire irons and air you could use. and they sold you patches and glue. They had hot patches also. You clamped them to the tube in a special C clamp type vise. and set the medium on fire and it vulcanized the patch to the tube.

That's why they have that little arrow on the gas gauge to show what side the fill is on!

Here's one about 15 miles from me. It was a truck stop, gas station, shop and restaurant. Trucks parked in back. I can remember the shop being open as a welding shop up into the early 2000's, while the rest was closed down. It got torn down and replaced with a metal shop building for the welding shop. It's now a RV place. lecks 66.jpg lecks shop.jpg lecks 66.jpg lecks shop.jpg

My first job off the farm was here, except about 30 years later in 1981, and it was a Skelly by then. Still in use as a repair shop.
