  7. I could see the photos in my email notification of this post but oddly they don't show up in the thread and I tried two different browsers.

  10. There it is- your modern car, right there.

Yes, the HQ one tonner. $2200.00 new in '72. Extremely popular, and still a big fave of the street machine/ burnout / show crowd.

  12. Mad Max was a Ford Falcon. As of 2017, the Falcon is extinct. 57 years, not a bad run.

  13. I'm trying to imagine Mad Max in a '60 XK Falcon. :D

    Answering post from 2010. :)
This is the show chassis displayed at various venues in '58-59. This (terrible quality) pic is from the late '70s auction catalog mentioned above.

This is the car the Blackhawk Museum had in its collection from the late '80s onward. It is not known if it truly is built on the Argonaut chassis or not, nor who built the car. Obviously from the timeline, it wasn't the Argonaut Motor Machine Company.

I found 2 short videos from a person living in Osaka Japan, driving the above roadster, undoubtedly the same car. It's starting to look a bit rough- corrosion on the headlights, body damage to the rear and what looks like duct tape residue on the doors as if the pass compartment was tarped over at one point.

That Birmingham rear suspension reminds me of the 1914 Cornelian, with the four struts replacing the third leaf spring. I think the Cornelian is more elegant of the two.

  25. Do you have any additional information on it? It is most definitely the same car that the Blackhawk collection had until 1997. Being in Japan certainly took it off the radar, at least in North America. Is there a link to the video?

Here is a picture of the 1932 Hupmobile Model F 222, I restored in the 90's. Straight eight, and free wheeling. 1932 Hupmobile.png

Car in the videos is not long enough (or I believe wide enough) to have been built on the original Argonaut chassis IMO... so where is the original chassis? How did this neo-classic roadster come to be called 'Argonaut'?

  29. Thank you so much for posting that video- it is much appreciated. I actually think that the chassis proportions are correct, it was actually quite narrow in the main rail area under the passenger compartment- the mufflers made it look much wider than it actually was. The rear rails may have been shortened for the installation of the Glenn Pray Auburn body and the channeled appearance of the body relative to the frame may make the car look smaller than it is. The Argonaut's 126-inch wheelbase was very close to the Auburn's 127.

I spoke to two former owners of the Argonaut and both said that the car was built on the prototype "show" chassis and was powered with a 392 Marine Hemi and 3-speed with overdrive. One told me that the "car took two men and boy to drive." Apparently the clutch was extremely heavy and the overdrive was difficult to operate. Thanks again, it is good to know that it still exists.
