Looks really nice. The Ford engineers couldn't have done better, but wait they didn't!

I have 2 different thermostat housings, one that tips the outlet off to the side and one that points up.

Neither one is ideal, the one that points up is the best however it’s not far to the rad and it’s pointing at the sky :D

So, I cut it apart and I’m changing it so I’ll be able to have a decent top rad hose.

    Stay tuned :D

So, here’s how a seemingly simple modification of one little piece can take up the better part of 2 plus days :D

Cutting apart a casting made in the 50s was interesting to say the least.
Welding it back together with nickel rod was challenging given that it constantly wanted to crack

After 4 tries I finally got it done.
The final solution was nickel rod welding followed by a slow cool wrapped in insulation and then a sandblast followed by a coating of handi flux for a coating of silver brazing alloy to fill in all the pits that kept coming up from the crap coming out of the old cast.
    Whew.

Then I had to do something about the corroded bypass hose tube connection.

That involved removing it and tapping the hole out to 3/8 NPT and threading in one end of a brass pipe nipple.

After all that I’ll at least be able to have a decent top rad hose.

Nicely done. Miles and miles above my skill level. However, it's comforting to know that I have friends capable of doing this so if I ever need it...

Every time I check in on your build I am blown away!

Thanks for taking the time to document all of this. Great job

Yeah, when I saw you talking about modifying the neck, I knew that it would be a... booger.
It would have been easier to 3D print a plastic replica of what you wanted and had it cast. Or fab it from scratch. Longer to final product, though.
Looks completely 'at home' and part of the engine now, which is really the point, isn't it? Great job, as always!

Thanks, booger is putting it mildly :D
I’ve done a lot of cast work over my career but this thing gave me fits.
Who knows what they put in the casting but it was anything but quality :D

Larry, The RPU is really coming along well. Washington blue is the perfect colour choice and the level of your attention to detail is top notch.

  16. Nicely done! That PCV system came out slick. Mine is set up the same way and it works great

Installing my water pump pulley and the Mummert alternator mount has proven to be interesting because I had Tim Mcmaster put a custom harmonic balancer and pulley on the engine when he built it.
That required a bit of adjustment of the water pump pulley mounting flange and also meant that I had to space the alternator mount a very small bit from the engine.

I got a little technical in setting up my laser to confirm that I had the pulleys all lined up properly.
Once I get it sorted out I’ll paint everything before I assemble it for the final time.

That is great. Who could have imagined even 20 years ago that a Hot Rodder would be using a laser building a Hot Rod. :)

I wrapped up the alternator installation, that Mummert alternator mount is really a nice piece.

I painted the alternator just like the starter and I found that a handful of foam earplugs works well to plug up all the holes and keep paint out of the internals.

A few trips to the parts store and I finally have the right size belt.

Thanks Al. I appreciate the offer, those are nice valve covers but I already have a pair of vintage Finned Edelbrock script covers waiting in the wings.

Ear plugs are a clever idea for “masking” the alternator. Looks like your getting pretty close

Yes I’m getting closer, all of the detail work takes up a lot of time.

I mounted the 1-5 psi Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator and then fabricated a bracket to mount the fuel log.
Then I made the fuel line from the fuel pressure regulator up to the fuel log .
Next will be the lines to the carbs.
